Is there anyone who has a Nextel phone that they were able to use with Bluetooth? Note the email message I received from their tech support department:

Dear Timothy Maxwell,

Thank you for contacting nextel.com.

Please be advised, the following phones have Bluetooth capability:
i30sx, i35s, i50sx, i55sr, i58sr, i60c, i80s, i85s, i88s, i90c,
i95cl, i730, i205, Bobby Jones I99cl and BlackBerry 6510.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? COULD THIS BE TRUE?

I think you're right but notice the entire message from Nextel. This customer service rep seems pretty confident:

Please note, Bluetooth is compatible with all i500 versions,
i700plus, all i1000 versions, all i2000 versions, and r750.
However, these phones require an audio adapter.

I will call them on this. Better still, I'm going to their service center and test the phones.

The CS is a tool. I'm glad that the T-Mobile reps I've had so far aren't that brainless. Of course, I could have expected something like that when I had Cingular. Once they told me it was AT&T's fault that I couldn't place a call in NYC.

Timothy,

I think what they mean is, they have bluetooth available accessories. I emailed Nextel myself a few weeks ago and they said that Bluetooth somehow interferes with their Direct Connect, so they cannot offer phones with the capability. I find it odd that they said that because of the accessories that they offer with Bluetooth like the Jabra thingie.

I wish there was someone knowledgeable to call regarding this...

even the accessory explanation makes no sense. bluetooth headsets are useless unless your phone has bluetooth itself..

Naah. They have 2.5mm to BT dongles available for phones. They work OK (I have a Jabra BT headset with a dongle left over from before my T637 days) and allow you to use BT headsets with a non BT phone.

But, that was the line Verizon fed us too about BT. That is until they figured a way to bring it to market for headsets while cripling all the cool things it can do - data transfer, sync, etc. So I switched to ATTWS and got a T637 and love it!

Does Motorola even make a Bluetooth enabled phone at all?

Does the Bluetooth dongle only allow communication to the headset?

Yea, the v710. I have one. But, since Verizon sux judging by the rumor mills, disabled the full BT functionality, you can only do dialup and headset/handset. So, in otherwords, you can't sync with it. Pretty freakin lame. Nice phone though, you can plop a 128M TransFlash card into it to transfer pics and movies from it and you can use MP3 files as ring tones. I used WireTap to encode some m4p files and then I cut them up using QT Pro.

Yes - V600, v5something, e398, etc. They make quite a few but IIRC none sync via BT to your Mac.

Another question:

Does using a USB dongle enable the phone to be used with iSync or Salling Clicker? I really couldn't care less about the iSync features, I will use my iPod for that. Salling Clicker is what I primarily want to use on my laptop, but at the moment I have nothing to work with.

Any suggestions or ideas (other than cancelling service with Nextel )?

I feel like I am on a crusade or something

Here is the letter I wrote to Nextel:

Nextel,

I have an issue I would like to address regarding phones you currently offer. I have always regarded Nextel as the forefront of new technologies and service offerings, which is why I made the switch to your company not long ago. In my dealings with your company, I have been very pleased with the level of service I receive and the quality of the products and services you provide.

That being said, I would like to express my disappointment that Nextel does not offer a phone that has built-in Bluetooth technology. You are undoubtedly familiar with the accessories you offer that allow certain Nextel phones to use Bluetooth-enabled headsets, such as the products by Jabra. Bluetooth headsets are great, but why stop there? Bluetooth support allows for wireless synchronization between computers and other miscellaneous electronic devices. This presents a great opportunity for your company to take advantage of the business aspects of this technology. Many of your competitors such as Verizon Wireless, AT&T Wireless, T-Mobile, Cingular, and even Sprint PCS have multiple Bluetooth phones offered from manufacturers such as Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Siemens, and palmone. I find it puzzling that Nextel, the cellular provider that is synonymous with innovation, has not yet realized the potential of this breakthrough, and capitalized on it.

I urge you to consider this request, and to give it the merit I believe it deserves. Thank you for your time.

I received an email back from Nextel, they said:

"Nextel has indicated no current plans to incorporate Bluetooth technology in their phones, but may do so in the future"

Way to state the obvious, ya bunch of bastards.

No.
Since when does a telephone support rep have a clue about ANYTHING ?

But if you don't believe it, go ahead and get one of the phones.
Good luck trying to get BT to work !
