Years ago, my wife and I used to go to Rascals at least once a month. You couldn't open the paper without seeing someone popular coming around and we'd get these seats literally inches from where they were on stage. Now there's practically nobody. We saw Joe Piscopo a few months back but he wasn't as funny as he used to be. HBO used to run comedy specials all the time, now there's nothing. All the great comedians like Paul Riser, Tim Allen, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Ray Romano, and a ton of others are just gone from touring, and nobody's come around in their place.

So what happened?

Mike

I saw "Larry the Cable Guy" a few months back...funny stuff! But I agree, there is a lull in the live comic scene right now.

They've all "sold out" and are doing TV shows now.

That's where all the dee-nare-oh is, after all...

That is almost incomprehensible- Joe Piscopo managed to get LESS funny?

The big names are still touring, they just aren't hitting the clubs like they used to. Even many of those with there own TV shows still do stand up in the off time. A lot of them perform in theaters though.

starman -

well, comedy central has an hour program, or 2 sometimes, of some new and upcommers several nights a week, HBO Comedy plays all the Carlin, Rodney, Eddie, etc standup shows what seems almost daily/nightly (old content, but they still play them).

as for touring, here in Detroit we get some big names (and small) weekly. they are still touring. maybe it is your market?

George Carlin was a genius but his recent stuff has lost a bunch of the satire in favor of anger.

Cosby was good in the day, some of the old records are pretty good. Didn't like him as much in concert, Same goes with Eddie Murphy.

Eddie Izzard is quite good though I don't know if he tours much anymore. And Robert Schimmel is very funny.

Not much beats listening to (or watching) some classic Richard Pryor stuff though.

Well, I've heard it said that George Carlin was a genius but his recent stuff has lost a bunch of the satire in favor of anger.

And that Cosby was good in the day, some of the old records are pretty good. Didn't like him as much in concert, Same goes with Eddie Murphy.

And although Eddie Izzard is quite good though I don't know if he tours much anymore. And Robert Schimmel is very funny.

You must admit, not much beats listening to (or watching) some classic Richard Pryor stuff though.

Wonder where these thoughts in my head come from...

Well I'm going to Edinburgh Fringe Festival next Wednesday, so there had better be some comedians there!

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

i was about to say that the best standup died a few months ago and that there is no longer any reason to watch live comedy.

Rita Rudner is FUNNY...

Gone are Rodney Dangerfield, Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Toti Fields, Phyllis Diller, Alan King, Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison, and Uncle Milty.

I can only think of Buddy Hackett whos is that funny now. Cosby, Carlin and a bunch of the funny men aren't so funny any more.

What ever happened to Firesign Theatre? ConceptionLand?

I have Dave Atell (of Comedy Central's Insomniac) CD called 'Skanks for the Memories.' It is one crude, twisted funny CD. I usually don't like vulgar humor, but that guy made me laugh until I had tears in my eyes. Seriously.
