There is a later version called 'The Deeper Meaning of Liff'. It has all the same stuff and more. It's in my bathroom at the moment

I borrowed my copy of A Deeper Meaning Of Liff to a friend two years ago. I have lived with him twice since then (and currently is). Maybe I should ask him if he still has it

The word that has always stuck in my mind (although it's not the funniest) is 'abilene', which is IIRC 'the pleasing coolness on the reverse side of the pillow'. Perhaps because I know and love that feeling so well.

There is a word, which I think originated in the North of England, 'thrutching'. Thrutching is the act of straining on the toilet. e.g. "I was constipated, and no matter how much I thrutched, I was unable to get anything out!'

This is nothing to do with The Meaning of Liff, but thought you might all appreciate the addition to your vocabulary.

Do you ever find yourself woking, and then you look at your hand and two fingers working in a cutting motion and you suddenly remember 'Ah yeah! Scissors!!!"

I was just about to reply with 'abilene' - that one stuck in my head too .

I've got the Deeper Meaning, and it's brilliant.

Thanks for thrutching, too - we don't have that down my way (the word, not the action!)

You do know these are all placenames (most if not all in the UK)?

Horribly OT, but "thrutching" reminds me of one of my mates, who in a conversation about toilet behaviour (god knows why we were talking about this), said "You know how you ratchet if you can't get one out?" and was met with a deathly silence. Turns out he moves his upper body back and forth in order to "ratchet out" his, errr, jobby. Rest assured he's never been allowed to forget that conversation.

I think there is potential for a poll there - "do you ratchet?".
