Do the older powerbooks (specifically the Pismo) have the same problem (broadcom/no broadcom chip) with the newer usb based 802.11g adapters as they do with the pcmcia cards?

With the PCM cards, Apple only support Airport or PCM cards with the same chipset as the Airport. These are so rare and continually changing that you might as well be panning for gold.

The only way to really know is to try and buy. Apple is constantly updating AirPort software so that it will work with other adapters and cards.

I did find one that purports to be Mac compatible. I have not bought yet.

It would probably work then. If it doesn't I am sure that they would refund your money.
