I use myspace quiet alot and safari basically jams (takes forever to scroll etc whenever someone has used semi transparent table backgrounds!!!

Does anyone else find this?

Firefox seems to handle them alot better!!

Thanks

Yeah, you are not alone, Safari is horible on MySpace. Depending on the graphical layout of a persons page Safari hangs and just doesn't scroll smoothly and many times won't render the page the way it's intended to look. Firefox handles it tons better but not all perfectly. The reason for this (and I hate to mention it) is because many people on MySpace are setting up their pages using Internet Explorer on Windows. I figured this out when I tried MySpace using Virtual PC. Internet Explorer scrolled perfectly without hangups. Now if it runs perfect using Virtual PC then we know what the real problem is. These are some of the things that irritate me about me about using a Mac on the web is that Internet Explorer made sites can jack up surfing for Mac users.

Hopefully Apple improves Safari in Leopard so we can overcome these Internet Explorer thorns in our side.

I bet it's pages with a lot of Flash effects. It seems like Flash is still unreasonably sluggish on the Mac.

Its nothing to do with flash.. they get handled fine.. Its myspaces with semitransparent table backgrounds.

Works fine in the WebKit nightlies, for what it's worth.

That MySpace link is a great example but it does work very well on Firefox and not Safari. I just checked Internet Explorer on Windows and the page scrolls fine there and the whole web page is not washed out like it looks in Safari and Firefox. If anyone uses Parallels or Virtual PC they can see what I mean. When the page is designed using Internet Explorer the Mac browsers suffer a bit. A lot of the design of MySpace is most likely made using that crappy Internet Explorer. I took a screen shot to show the page rendering difference but I don't know how to post it so if anyone is interested in seeing that please let me know how to post it.
On this account of Safari not rendering or scrolling well, it's all on Apple. Safari should be better than the rest by now.

I believe the part where you "use Myspace" is the root of your problem.

I don't know what's up with your Mac but flash has always ran very well on the Mac. I have never had an issue with animation or movie playback. Don't quote me on this but I thought flash was made for the Mac first.

As a Web Developer/Designer. I would rather Apple spent time and resources improving Safari's handling of well coded pages and elements, rather than trying to fix a problem with the latest code hack for some fashionable layout trick on the mountain of sh*ty code that is MySpace.

Well, if Apple is gonna fix Safari for one then they need to fix it for all. Those are just "Your Needs". Everybody has different browsing needs, your response is really selfish and prejudice against others.

That website is a huge piece of crap anyway, so good riddance.

But more helpfully, the page actually works in the latest WebKit (as was said) and it didn't in the latest Safari, so improvements have definitely been made. Leopard will have those improvements.

Anyone who wants to see some of Safari's improvements in Leopard, download a WebKit nightly (http://nightly.webkit.org).

Here here..... Myspace is a fantastic tool for a musician such as myself for promotion and networking.. to dismiss it is rediculous..

I love comments such as

So your websites have nothing to do with fashion then??? you never use 'fashionable' layouts? Myspace problem is that is too easily edited by the often inept user!!!

You might say that's part of MySpace's problem. More specifically, there's the fact that it makes it too easy for people to edit it in awful, hackish ways. There's also the fact that MySpace is kind of inherently crappy.

Being "fashionable" has nothing to do with it. Most MySpace pages look like ****.

I eventually found a site where I was able to copy a little script that disabled CSS. I put the link in the address bar and clicked it whenever I went to someone's MySpace page that would lag (most all of them). It isn't the same as having the page run smoothly the way it was intended to, but I actually prefer to get all the backgrounds and junk out of the page anyways.
