I'm at NYC hotel. TheoOnly have ethernet in rooms. Does not work, tried two cables and I tried another room.
MUst be settings. I ran through automatic and some of the drop downs in network setting -- don't understand it.
They say it should all work perfectly and they have not a clue what to do.

Try a new "location" in your Ethernet settings. It should go to the default settings, which should work just about anywhere.

Have you restarted? At times a restart will cure stubborn network problems. With an Ethernet connection you should just see an automatic connection established.

If it works in the lobby, the hotel needs to fix the one in your room or give you a discount.

WIFI works in the lobby, but he was talking about Ethernet. Ethernet is far more reliable than WIFI so if WIFI is working it's the ethernet connection at fault and not your Mac.

Hah! I was reading too quickly. Right on though, they need to fix the ethernet connection.

Sorry, looks like email notifcation not working for the site.
A client came into my room with the same laptop and got on fine with Ethernet.
My laptop is in mint condition. I still don't get it.
Reboot does not help, nor, changing any settings so far that I know of.

Launch Network Diagnostics, it will try to find the problem point.

System Prefs -> Network -> Assist me... (button) -> Diagnostics (button)

Or: /System/Library/CoreServices/Network Diagnostics.app
