Lately I've been having the following symptoms:
* When running a Webkit browser (Safari, Omniweb), or playing a movie in Quicktime, the entire user interface hangs. The mouse pointer moves, but no UI element responds.
- I can still SSH into the machine, but attempting to quit, or even force quit (kill -9) UI processes just makes them drop into the suspended mode with parentheses, e.g.
(Safari)

I have done the following troubleshooting:
- wiped the drive and reinstalled 10.4.5 from the original discs
- after the above, updated to 10.4.7 and Quicktime 7.1.2.
- run Apple Hardware Test
- launched the apps from a different user

yet the problem persits.

Has anyone else suffered this, or have a clue of how to go about troubleshooting it?

I had similar symptoms when my video card went bad.

Does your hardware test check for bad ram?

top might give you a clue about memory use and swap or runaway threads.

Can you reproduce it or is it random? Does it wait a set amount of time after you start up?

Maybe it joined an Isis cult and doesn't know how to tell you.
