She appeared to be making a direct hit on the east coast of Hispaniola but then veered north so all we got was some rain.

When I lived in Sint Maarten we got hit pretty bad by Omar (cat 3). Amazingly I slept through the whole thing.

It's been anything from "Giant storm imminent!" to "Tropical Depression with a little rain!"

If it ends up smacking NC and Virginia then it'll be quite weak by the time is makes it here, if it skirts NC and gathers strength...well a trip to the liquor store is in order.

Like many here no doubt, I have a drawer full of LED & similar torches, including headlamps, the best for a power outage, and two large drawers full of batteries.

Plus several torches dotted around the house, and battery powered PIR LED lights.

Also battery powered mobile phone chargers..

I have had ONE power outage in 3 years, here in the UK, it lasted 30 minutes !!

30 minutes without computer or TV !!

I also have used Pepsi bottles full of water I rotate occasionally, no water once in 5 years, and we were warned about that, maintenance work. !!

I don't understand the mentality of some people, according to UK reports, of people only now buying torches & batteries for the Hurricane, and the Mayor of NY having to warn about the safe use of candles.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++

Would the average City dweller have books, battery powered radio, with batteries, non electric can openers, ( I quite like cold baked beans) or other food not requiring cooking ?

Will they have prepared by baking / cooking food out of the (potentially) useless freezer, or bought the same ?

We don't really stock up on canned goods. We have a can opener, couple gallons of water, candles and flashlights though. We could throw some batteries in the old radio too.

The wind is picking up a bit but so far just rain.

In reference to page 37 of this old scientific paper:

"Sooner or later" does not mean "later".
Is this going to be the 100 year flood or the 10 year flood?

Hear on Martha's Vineyard it is almost entirely a wind event. Lights have flickered a few times, but trees are going down at a good clip. Awhile ago I could look out into my yard and see branches come down all around, and one of my trees fell over the road, thus blocking the only way in or out for people up the hill from here. A town crew had it cleared in about 15 minutes time. I heard people getting off of the overnight shift at the hospital ended up turning around and sleeping overnight as so many other trees were coming down, they felt it was too unsafe. Inland from here out in the western part of there's quite a bit of damage, and I believe a tornado did a number on the city of Springfield. No rain here, but a think up to 10 inches out there.

I have an aunt and uncle in North Carolina, near but not on the Outer Banks, and cousins in New Jersey. It's been kind of quiet in terms of hearing anything from or about them, but I'm expecting this is due to power outages rather than anything worse.

Wind snapped a huge tree in the front of my building. The entrance and sidewalk are completely inaccessible. Had anyone been walking or standing under it when it happened they would have been seriously injured or killed.

We called DPW and they sent the fire department and police who roped off the area.

Lost power for a solid 12+ hours today. Saw a 40 foot Pine come crashing down at my buddy's house. Not much rain to speak of, plenty gusty though.

There's a difference between being prepared and being one of those people that makes the "OMG I must buy 2 months worth of groceries so we can survive this dusting we might get overnight!" runs every time the weatherman calls for, well, seasonal weather. I remember at some point last winter there were two snow storms over a course of the week and half and I swear the same people made the "OMG" run as if they had burnt through their stores in the few days previous.

I live in NE PA where the Hurricane was not a real threat and a friend was telling me how the milk and bread was picked clean at the grocery store. People love to panic.

Well, karma is a bitch... we lost power around noon, and still haven't got it back yet. There is a tree down the hill across the road that knocked down the power. Still there this morning. Lots of small-medium branches in our yard that we cleaned up in the afternoon, just to leave the house.

Candles and flashlight and radio came in handy, but not enough local info on the radio. Had to use sneakernet to find out who/where else in town lost power.

Tonight will be grilling whatever is in the freezer.

I see some areas may not have power restored for up to 5 days.

How do members cope without power in the house & local area for Internet.

Here in the UK, phone lines are powered from the exchange, and if I had a portable mac, I could power the portable off batteries, or car, same for router.

In the US the land line (copper) includes 14v(?) to provide the required power, but you'll need to find an old corded phone to use it. I only lost power for a few hours but the office doesn't so I'm telecommuting with no access to email,r source control, or the bug database.

Yeh, the UK wireless phone makers suggest you keep a wired phone for emergencies.

I have 5v input to my portable home phone wireless base station, so no problem there.

In the UK, BT supply -48v DC down the phone line, at low power, less when connected.

This only means that the phone line will work when local power is out.

Not sure about how this affects Broadband, but a dial up modem for emergencies should work.

Similarly, USB 3G Broadband modem, assuming local phone company mast is powered.

I live in an area with somewhat consistent power. It only goes out a few times a month however lately it's been worse. I was without power for much of last Tuesday and Wednesday. Much of the DR has daily outages that last several hours. My water goes out every day for 4-6 hours. Typically at night but you never know when you're going to turn on the faucet and be greeted with silence.

I have all of my computers connected to UPSs and have virtually everything on surge protectors (not sure how much that is really going to help). My internet is WiMAX and it typically stays on when the power goes out. My modem/router is on the UPS so I can use my laptop to do my work until the UPS dies.

Once you adapt to the unreliability of power and water it's actually not a big deal. If you can believe, I don't even have running hot water!

Can you power it off batteries, or may the local exchange be down too ?

I have power but no TV or internet at home.
My sister in law just got her power back on.
There is some flooding around my in law's house.
My office building has no power.

My parents were supposed to fly home yesterday, but are staying an extra couple of days.

I didn't do anything special to get ready for the storm. I already had a few flashlights and always have some canned food and bottles of water around. Every store in the area sold out of emergency supplies. I think people buy a generator just in case and then must return it after the storm if they don't use it.

But what I want to know is how Turtle feels about government in general. Perhaps this thread would be an acceptable place for him to discuss that. Multiple times.

It's -24VDC straight from the Central Office and called the "battery voltage" (for a reason, they often still have an enormous fish tank of a battery in smaller COs). The switch itself senses changes in the voltage on a given line caused by picking up or putting down the handset, and it does the switching based on that. A wired, land-line phone is almost an essential "disaster preparedness" item because the land-line phone system is so robust in power failure situations.

I thought I was in her away, but she did a little back flip type thing and skipped right over the Boston area. We got a little but of gusty wind, very little rain, and lots of leaves everywhere. At one point they were talking about sustained 80MPH winds. I was afraid my boat might literally blow away, so I hooked it up to my truck for the storm. I think we ended up with a short period of 40mph winds with higher gusts and that's it. Not very impressive.
