Her sister suggested I just ask what she wanted, thus:

Me: If someone were to want to know what you would like as a birthday present, what would you tell them?
Her: if soimeone where to ask me that, i'd say something useful, edible, or funny, and no teddy bears

Sadly, this response is not very helpful to me. Can anyone suggest something or somethings in the $10-$15 range that I could get at a place like the local Target (I don't have a car) in the next day or two?

I'm thinking I might give her one of those 10 pound Ghirardelli's chocolate bars, but I'm worried that would fall into the category of overkill to give as a friendly gift. It's her 21st birthday, but she's not getting alcohol from me.

Thanks for the help.

Dude, if you're at College Park and still an undergrad--if your friend is just turning 21 I am guessing you are--then get her a gift certificate to IKEA. It's just down the street. Even better, take her there and let her pick out something she wants, something fun and frivolous.

Is this someone you want to sleep with? Get her a gift certificate to that sex shop on lower Wisconsin in Georgetown--I forget the name as it's been a few years since I was in there--or better yet, take her there and buy her something naughty.

Don't go nuts with the chocolate - girls can react in strange ways to mass quantities of fattening food. I wish I had something constructive to go along with that negative point, but I don't have much to offer. Can you think of a DVD she may like?

Get her a movie called Serendipity with John Cusack. It's a REALLY great movie, especially for women. Trust me on this one.

She'll LOVE it. Great story and soundtrack too.

Buy her a Windows XP box with only Internet Explorer (no Firefox, Spamblockers, or anti-virus software) and a printout of the story about the tech guy who was paid in sex.

You'll know she's not interested if you go by her place a week or 2 later and she has a new Mac sitting on her desk....

How about an iTunes gift card? If she doesn't have iTunes, she should!

4 shot glasses and some little chocolate squares and a card that got a laugh out of my roommate. Will see how it goes tonight.

Thx all.

Now I need to track down a male blowup doll for a girl who turns 18 in 3 weeks *schemes*
