Apple on Tuesday removed disclaimer language from its Apple Watch web page, signalling that it has obtained approval for sale of the device in at least the US, if not all the major countries where Apple is currently planning to launch the Apple Watch at retail beginning April 24. The Watch will be available for preview and pre-ordering -- but not for sale -- at Apple Stores beginning April 10 in select countries.

The previous language, now removed, in fine print on Apple's web page said that the Apple Watch had "not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained." The removal of the disclaimer implies that the approval process is complete. The Watch is scheduled to debut in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, United Kingdom, and the US for its initial launch, with more countries being added, according to CEO Tim Cook, "as quickly as possible."

Mail Pilot 2 for Mac previewed, Apple Watch version coming soon

Alternative email program Mail Pilot 2 for the Mac is now available as a preview beta, featuring what the developer calls "an intense level of simplicity and focus." The program, which is aimed at getting users to file mail appropriately so that actions or follow-ups can be accomplished, will feature far greater speed than the current version, along with dragging inline attachments, automatic "bot-mail" collapsing, and further emphasis on clearing the inbox through a stripped-down interface and task-based approach.

Developers Mindsense have announced that the company is working on a version of the program for the Apple Watch, intended as an update to the existing iOS version of Mail Pilot 2. The Watch version will let users check the inbox, use Glances to handle reminders, and send designated notifications. The company is also preparing an all-new email program called Periscope. Interested parties can sign up for notifications and the Mail Pilot 2 public preview through the website.

Hacker gets Android Wear device to answer FaceTime audio calls

After having figured out how to get an Android Wear device to display notifications from an iPhone, developer Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh has released a new video purporting to show an Android Wear smartwatch receiving an incoming audio call. In the video, an incoming phone call (a FaceTime Audio call, specifically) is shown prompting a notification on both the iPhone and the Android smartwatch.

The hack was accomplished without jailbreaking the Android device, but as seen in the video the accomplishment relies on additional software, as such notifications are not officially supported in Android Wear products at present. Abu-Garbeyyeh mentioned in the release notes of the video that he opted to have the watch answer the notification through software rather than use his hand to answer it for demonstration purposes. Also, the video does not show whether the call can actually be answered and a conversation begun with it.

Thanks to API support from both Apple and Google, smartwatches can easily add notification support from either iOS or Android, but going beyond that will require either jailbreaks or additional support from smartphone platform creators.
