eBay has the power brick with ethernet, but they're mostly going for $140-150 used. Cheapest I saw was $95 + $6 ship. A dongle with network jack would be cheaper in most cases.

I'd personally want ethernet, as WiFi has those occasional drops. Works better for migrations too. And no congestion issues with the neighbors. That said, retired parents are likely to be more tolerant of reconnects, especially if they aren't online as much as we are.

Yeah the less access they have to the internet, the better. I've thought about surreptitiously adding website and/or email filters, but haven't done that yet.

Migration Assistant on the new iMac refused to pick up the Time Machine drive. Ended up wiping the drive, updating the iPhoto library to a Photos library on the old iMac, copying the Photos library to the now blank backup drive, copying the library to the new iMac, then letting new Photos update it to the latest. Luckily it looks like all of the metadata is saved, so photos are grouped appropriately.

Brought the old iMac home with me to recycle for them, but figured I'd see if I could get the screen off for fun. Got 3/4 of the way around and poked something and now there's a 1/2" vertical blank line in the monitor.

Glad I didn't have them buy a bunch of new parts and then bork the thing. I still might use it for a 3D printer controller, maybe drill some VESA mount holes in the foot and hang it somewhere. I ordered a 500GB SSD just to throw in it so it will work again.

Threw the SSD into the iMac last night and gave it a fresh install of Catalina. It's perfectly quick and usable now aside from the vertical bar on the screen.

The only downside is the lack of updates available, the last security update was a couple of years ago and Safari is a bit old. I could throw Windows 10 on it and it'd be fully up to date. Really all I need it to do is display a web page served by the Raspberry Pi controlling the 3D printer, any OS could do that.

I've never managed to get a line like that on one of these. It's usually the glass I crack. Could be the LVDS cable if you're lucky.

Opencore Legacy Patcher is tricky to get used to, but once its done it works great on these iMacs.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

It might be worth inspecting the video connector(s) you opened, with a magnifying glass. Look for a misaligned pin or speck of dust.

Hardly worth opening again if used as a server, so the only reason would be if it bugs you enough.

I putty-knifed the screen open with the computer running, the dead pixels showed up in real time exactly where I was jabbing. Since then I disconnected the monitor to do the hard drive replacement and put it back together (sans adhesive) and no change. Now that it works I'll get some double-sided tape and drill the foot for a VESA mount and call it good.

This is a proposed memorial to those who lost their lives to COVID, and a tribute to first responders.

They’re dandelions, but I think they look like a virus.

That can't be a coincidence, right?

It’s such a poor intentional choice I was hoping it was coincidence.

Ridiculous, but in the best way.

I guess this has been around for awhile, but I hadn’t seen it ‘til now.
