(CNN) -- Police on Friday named Madeleine McCann's mother Kate a suspect in her disappearance, and said the girl's blood was found in a vehicle the family rented 25 days after reporting her disappearance, according to a family spokeswoman. ... Philomena McCann, Madeleine's aunt, said police were suggesting Kate McCann might have accidentally killed her daughter. ... Madeleine's parents, who are both doctors from Leicestershire in central England, have campaigned internationally to secure the safe return of their daughter, including having a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI and securing support from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and soccer star David Beckham. ... Madeleine's father Gerry McCann is also expected to be questioned on Friday. Family friend Clarence Mitchell told The Associated Press that Gerry would also be named as an arguido or a formal suspect. The couple have maintained their innocence throughout.
How do you explain the blood in the rental car?

A) The Portuguese police are woefully incompetent.
B) Madeleine's parents are guilty.
C) Freakish coincidence.

Poor kid.

God, she looks just like my daughter when she was that age.

Well, we can rule out A. The forensic work was done in a British laboratory. (But of course, they might be incompetent too).

Well, ask yourself: Does MacNN have a daughter?

That kid's preparing for her wedding ceremony somewhere in North Africa.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

One day, when you're a parent, and have a four year old girl, you will find it hard to believe you used to make jokes like that.

It wasn't a joke. North Africans have been stealing kids off that coast for centuries.

Now the father has also been officially named a suspect, and both parents are returning to the UK.

It's unimaginable. I just don't believe the parents were involved. Don't ask me why, it's just a gut feeling.

There's no question that the mother looks profoundly mortified, and has done since her daughter disappeared. However, isn't it possible that she accidentally killed her daughter? I can imagine circumstances under which that could happen. She hid the body because she has two children who need her and she won't be much good to them in the slammer.

It's highly unlikely, but it is not impossible.

Put yourself in their shoes. If you were in another county and your 4 year old went missing, would you, could you go home? I can't imagine both parents leaving so soon without answers, unless they already knew them.

The girl disappeared over 4 months ago. They do have other children to concern themselves with and I'm sure it's costing them a lot of money to stay in Portugal. I presume they have jobs they need to return to as well. At some point that had to come to the conclusion that staying in Portugal wasn't going to result in finding the girl any faster (if they ever do).

Well, I appreciate it whenever someone says better safe than sorry.

Going back OT, I think I saw something indicating toxicology reports on the daughter's found blood indicate a death by sleeping pills (Don't hold me to it, I skimmed).

So one of the latest hypotheses is: The parents were trying to have a meal with friends at a nearby restaurant. The mother subdued her daughter with sleeping pills, and the child died from an overdose. The parents hid the body. On the one hand, this seems somewhat odd, given that the mother is a doctor. On the other hand, the mother's diary is filled with complaints about her wild, uncontrollable daughter. On a third hand, what parent hasn't made such complaints?

Will we ever know the truth?

BTW, I don't know how big this story is in the U.S., but the British press have gone absolutely nuts. Did you know that the BBC hired a helicopter to follow the McCann's car home from the airport. WTF?

Don't know how it is in the U.K. with doctors and "chemists," but in the U.S. it is not unusual for a pharmacist to have a much keener understanding of dosages and effects of drugs (and their interactions) than most doctors. It wouldn't surprise me if a doctor accidentally caused a patient to overdose.

However, when the doctor is the patient's mother, it is difficult to see this scenario. I believe the dad is a doctor, too.

I just don't think they're guilty. One wacko doc, maybe. Two wacko docs who happen to be married to each other and both are willing to either murder their daughter or hide her accidental death? That just strains my sense of what is possible.
