Apart from Jaguar just running fine on my Pismo there is some strange behavior I'd like to share:

I'm running 10.2 set to German language. The Finder and the Terminal shows the usual homedir folders in English (Movies, Pictures, Public, Drop Box...) - so IMHO they are 'physically' named as such.

BUT: Apps that are localized to German will behave different and show German dir-names in file dialogs (Filme, Bilder, ffentlich, Briefkasten).

This is VERY confusing! Any thoughts on where I can rid of this or make it consistent? Those German names are pretty bad anyway...

Everything is fine. You are complaining about it, but it was *the* most requested localization feature (I know that for sure, because a friend of mine works for the company that localizes all the Apple stuff).

They have added an entry in the resource fork where localized names are set. They are now displayed in the Finder.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Well, why doesn't the Finder show those names? It's ok when US Photoshop shows English names but the Finder on a German OSX system should show the German names or am I mistaken?

The Finder shows the localized folder names (at least it's supposed to). Try logging out.

If you really hate the German folder names that much, remove the ".localized" files in each of those folders.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Logging out didn't help - I even did a restart. Strange. Thanks for the ".localized" hint! I renamed those files so that I now have a consistent naming convention until I find out why the Finder doesn't diplay it right...

it seems that checking the "always display filename extensions" (not too sure about the translation from french to english) in the Finder prefs disables the automatic localization.

edit : grammar

yupp, but only in Finder widows, Dock and FileSelector boxes (Navigation services or whatever they are called now) are still translated. The german name btw. is "Suffix immer zeigen".

bye.

Good stuff! By unchecking the suffix thing it now works consistently throughout Jaguar - even English apps now show localized names. So I guess I'll leave it unchecked...

sorry, but imo it's really bad only to show the localized names of folders when "alsways show extension" is unchecked.

i have it set to always show the extension, but what if i wanted to see localized folder names in the finder?

uh!

Of course you're right. There should be two options 1) Suffixes and 2) Localised names. Shouldn't be too hard to do and also would not be a bad thing for the average user...

I guess the suffix-button kind of toggles the pro-mode...

Still, the localisation is good stuff. It even works consistently in English apps as long as you keep the suffix thing unchecked.

of course it is. But it is a known bug and Apple works on it.
