If there is a genius in documentaries it would be Ken Burns.
There is not one of his documentary that is boring or you will not learn anything.
This one is incredible, he was able to translate the beauty of the National Parks; it was so interesting to learn how they came about.
Although I have watched only the first 2 hours I cannot wait until I watch the rest of it.
It is tonight September 29 at 8:00 pm and until Friday.

Been enjoying the series so far, though the soundtrack reminds me of iPhoto's default slideshow music.
I've gained a lot of respect for Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir. We could use a few men like this today.
Visually, the series is stunning - on a large tv you'll be brought to tears by the beauty.

Roosevelt is interesting because he is both loved and hated by the modern environmentalist movement.
Of course he was a leading environmentalist and made huge strides in that area in his time because of his love and respect for nature.
On the other hand, he was a leading proponent of the "but I should still be able to shoot whatever I can pay to see" crowd - you know, the same crowd that each kills hundreds of big-game animals such as elephants, lions, giraffes, bears, tigers, rhinos, hippos, etc. etc. etc. per year just for trophy reasons - and that philosophy is often used by "them" even as the very animals they hunt grow increasingly more and more rare.
Interesting and great man, nonetheless.

I think that is something that John Burroughs & John Muir (and others) tried to get across to him. If it's of any value (and I believe it is to some degree) a large portion of the animals he killed are in museums around the world. However, modern day hunters who still enjoy big game hunting for the sole purpose of getting a trophy are somewhat deranged, I believe. I know a couple, and I just don't get it. "Ooh - look at that majestic, beautiful animal! Let's kill it!!"

Yeah, I agree!
I mean, I have nothing against hunting animals myself, and I'm a big proponent of integrating wild-caught animals into one's diet - rather than solely using resource-intensive and terribly-mistreated animals like farmed beef etc. - but the trophy-hunter mentality really makes me scratch my head. It's almost never even a situation where those particular animals should be harvested from a resource-management standpoint either.

If the series eneded on Friday, Im surprised they didnt mention the Yellowstone fires and the "let it burn" policy that allowed a large area to burn.

Saw it on Colbert, looked pretty interesting. I'll have to check it out from the library when it's released on DVD.

I just pre-ordered the set on DVD. It's been a great series, really enjoyable - though I missed a few hours here & there because of work.
I think may might have missed the segment on the Adirondacks (the largest national monument in the US).
Spent time hiking/camping there - millions of acres of wilderness. Once hiked 13 miles and saw nothing but unspoiled wilderness - it was like a religious experience.

Cool, thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to order the Blu-ray as I didn't get to see it during broadcast.

I think that's the regular DVD price, not BluRay.

Thank God now the wildlife is protected.
What I found the funniest was when Wyoming and Alaska fought so hard not to have national parks in their states and now they could not live without it.
The ex-governor of Wyoming saying that he was happy he lost this fight.
Like my sister says people are so resitant to change.
Beautiful and positive documentary, can't wait until his next one.
