Last night I shut down my MacBook Pro after it installed the latest mac updates, and this morning when I turned it on, it will only start up in windows. Even if I hold alt/option when starting up, which brings up the options of which operating system I was to use, both the mac and windows choice bring me to windows. Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this?

boot from your OS X install disc or Mac's restore disc, and run Disk Utility, both for disk errors and permissions.

thanks for the help, but is there any other way to fix the problem without either disk? I'm at college and forgot both at home.

You could put your Mac into firewire target disk mode, connect it to another Mac, and run Disk Utility from the 2nd Mac to scan your Mac.

What happens when you try to change it in the Boot Camp control panel (startup disk)?

I wonder if you can boot into single-user mode and then use bless:

bless - Change the system's boot settings (the "blessed" system). Useful to switch back to OS 9 if OS X isn't bootable, and you don't want to juggle boot CDs.
Example:
bless -folder9 "/System Folder" -use9
Bless the OS-9 system folder named "System Folder" on the current (OS-X) boot volume, and make OS-9 the default for booting from this volume.

Isn't that for OS 9 though?

Doesn't make sense to use for OS X.

Exactly. If you're in Single User Mode, you're already in OS X.

Your OS X install may be corrupt and that's why Windows always boots, even though you select the OS X drive from option-boot. See if you can target-disk mode your computer to another mac and backup the data (if possible). If not, you may have to start clean and reinstall OS X.

I want to know the answer to ibook_steve's question. If the Startup Disk Control Panel applet doesn't work to change the default boot OS, then there is definitely something wrong with the OS X installation-corruption of the boot record or something like that would be my guess.

Try booting from your OS CD and repair the drive (not permissions.)

ole, he says he failed to pack his OS disc when he headed off to college...

I still want to know what, if anything, the Startup Disk applet in Windows does for him...

Fyi, I know that when you're in single-user mode you're in OS X...I was thinking command-s at boot might circumvent bootcamp, then from single-user mode in OS X, manually set OS X as the default. Guess not though.

Also, bless can be used to set OS X as the blessed directory using "--folder" instead of "--folder9".
