I'm looking for a company that provides a cheap and decent web hosting package. For the moment, I'm mainly looking to store eBay pics and such so a nice bandwidth allotment is the main priority. But I may decide to throw up a site in the future.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I use www.pair.com. Not the cheapest but 100% reliable.

I just signed up with 1and1. $4.99 a month for two domains, tons of email addresses, plenty of hosting storage and bandwidth... It was an easy sell. Their default is paying 6 months in advance.

I've been using dreamhost since their 777 promo last year. Apparently it is still going (sign up for 1 year on the basic plan and use the promo code for a grand total of $9.24). 1 TB transfer a month, 20 GB disk space, unlimited domains per account, a bunch of other stuff.

Yeah, they are overselling but I have not had problems. I host a bunch of movies for friends and some other large files. I've yet to get close to the 1 TB limit, though.

They have some small downtimes every so often. I keep up with them on http://www.dreamhoststatus.com I appreciate their honesty in reporting everything (even downtimes that don't affect me or only affect people on 1 server). My previous host would go down for a while and mention nothing.

That's my suggestion.
Genius. You know who.

I have been using cernax.com for a while now and been very happy. Customer support is very prompt, and although they are not the cheapest, if I have a question, I always get an answer quickly.

I'm using dreamhost as well, very happy.

I don't know what promotions they're running now, but if you want, you can use APRA4 and it'll get you $50 off any yearly hosting plan.

Disclaimer: Yes, i get some sort of a kickback for this code, i'm not trying to deceive anyone. There may be better deals, I don't know, but this'll get you $50 off.

I've used both 1on1 and Dreamhost in the past.

No complaints with either of them and they typically have very quick responses to my support emails.

PM me if you are interested and want a demo link.

I've been using DreamHost for two months and it has been great. I used the 777 code and it was less than $10 and included the domain name registration. I don't think there is anyone who can beat that. It supports everything you can think of. You have the choice of PHP 4 or 5, and Ruby On Rails is supported. Also, you can connect to your e-mail via POP or IMAP. The account is automatically configured for both.

The 777 $10 code is only for the first year by the way. After the first year it goes up to $110 (or so) a year.

On a side note, this morning I got an email saying I'd been accepted into gmail for your domain and it is really nice. I don't like the webmail interface that dreamhost gives (squirrel mail) and now that I have gmail setup, it's great.

Oh, I didn't know about that thing.

But I won't use it. Squirrel mail ain't the best, but I don't trust Google. And plus, my SpamAssassin for my IMPA accounts works great. Don't want to lose that.

Well, what webmail application do you recommend ?
AFAIK, Squirrel Mail is already one of the better ones.

There are a few in that compete in the same space with similar packages. To name a couple of the more popular ones (some with unlimited domain hosting, some without):

dreamhost
jaguarpc
powweb
lunarpages

I never understand why people do their hosting through other companies than ones that compete in the same space as these.

I have a 1and1 account and I dislike it compared to my other ones (currently dreamhost and lunarpages). I have to log in with some unwieldly customer ID number and then there is a different number appended to the end of every FTP/SSH user name, or something along those lines.

It's in beta, but I've found it to be stable and 100x prettier than Squirrelmail, which is what really matters.

Ok, tested Roundcube, and I like what I see.

BUT: It's slow as molasses
Refreshing a folder with many mails takes sometimes 30 sec and more. I don't think it's my provider (Dreamhost), because Squirrel Mail (IMAP) is definitely faster.

Has anyone had a look at Zimbra ?
How does it perform ?

Another vote for dreamhost. I used to host with 1and1 and while they were reliable I found that they put too many restrictions on me.

I've used Simplehost and Dreamhost.

Simplehost was okay. Just okay.
Dreamhost is loads faster and a lot more space and bandwidth. So far it's great.

I second the observation on 1and1. They've been cheapest for domain reg - and convenient to redirect the DNS and have things hosted elsewhere - so I thought I'd try hosting one site with them. But... NOT very convenient.

Since then I've been hosting everything at DreamHost.

<shameless plug> I give up most of my rewards for referral and let forum folks get $60 off (most DH packages) by using my referral code, "SIMPLY60OFF" . [ Sorry - wasn't as bright a code as I hoped: note that that's a ZERO followed by a capital "O". ] </shameless plug>

One of the main things that killed 1&1 for me was the fact that everytime I called their support line I was patched to a support tech who I could barely understand because of their lack of English speaking skills.

Which seems kinda funny since as far as I can tell, 1&1 is a British company.

Another vote for Dreamhost. I've used 3 different hosting services so far, and Dream host is by far the best of the 3. They are not the cheapest (but are still quite cheap), but the service is excellent. Value for money is terrific.

I've used Powweb for the last 3 years, but recently switched over to DreamHost. Very nice service, and with great features. The one that sealed the deal for me was ...

1) WEBDAV support! So you can mount volumes in OS X and use it like a hard drive!

2) your emails are alloted into your web space, and since you get 20gb, you can effectively never run out of space (if you don't put much online). That way, you don't get those silly caps you get on other hosts (like 100MB caps on emails then they start bouncing)

3) SFTP/IMAPS support

etc. etc. etc.

hope that helps

Here's a DH self-made code for $60 off of the dreamhost packages: MACNNPROMOCODE

Me and couple of co-workers signed up for the 777 deal on dreamhosts about a year and a half ago... and it sucked. All of us left dreamhost before the year was up because the sites were slow as mollasses and they had downtime very very frequently. I'm glad that some of you really like them, but I will never try them again. They just left a bad taste in my mouth and everytime I think of hosting there I cringe.

Sure it wasn't your ISP ?

This is the first time I hear of very frequent downtimes with DH.
Myself, I only have been affected by an email downtime once in more than 2 years.

OK. Thanks for that 777 DH deal. I've signed up.

Now, a stupid question...

I have a file here: http://www.eugbanana.com/files/1.jpg

However, at http://www.eugbanana.com/files people have a full listing of the contents. How do I prevent this?

Dreamhost here, too. Since 1998.

Love dreamhoststatus.com! Since it's existence, every time I notice some quirk, before I report it to them, I go and check it out. They usually are working on fixing it again.

Thanks. I'll look into the htaccess thing. For some reason I just assumed that most sites would just default to hiding directories, or the host would have an option somewhere for this. I don't see the option for DreamHost.

With DH, you can set some .htaccess parameters in their web interface.
(like fordbidding hot-linking). Go to Goodies - Htaccess / WebDAV.

To deactivate directory listing, you still need to ssh into your domain and "pico .htaccess".
