I've got a first generation iPod and the battery has been dead for over a year. I just got off my ass and replaced the battery with one of the 18 hour batteries from macsales.com. Worked great. Charged it up with the 110v wall charger and firewire cable. Played for a few days. My wife let it run all the way down and now I can't get it to charge. I plug it into a known good firewire cable and the Mac and the Mac doesn't see the iPod, nor does it start charging. I plug it into the wall charger/firewire combo and it doesn't get any activity on the screen, nor will it charge. The part of the charger that plugs into the wall - and the actual iPod itself - get warm.

I've taken the iPod apart to ensure the battery connect is solid and there are no breaks in the power cable from the connector to the battery. No obvious problem.

Anybody stumbled across this? Was kinda nice to have my iPod working for the first couple of days. Just spend $40 on the battery - would be pissed if it was a one-time charge battery...!

Thoughts?

thanks - danbrew

I assume you tried resetting it (holding down menu and play buttons) already, or perhaps disconnecting and reconnecting the battery may have already reset it.

My suspicion is that the battery, even though relatively new, may have kaputzed. Try calling the batter vendor for ideas, too.

Third-party batteries appear to be more sensitive to complete discharges than OEM batteries. And if you completely discharge a lithium battery, it will short out. See if you can get it replaced.
