What exactly has been "overhauled"... I certainly can't tell from that video still. It looks exactly the same as the iTunes I'm looking at right here.

If you go to the itunes part of the apple site and download it, everything tells you it's 4.9, but the download is itunes5.dmg, I'm installing it now

Yet another new GUI design from Apple. When will the madness end. The mini player looks like crap now too. I love the new searching though.

Yeah, I'm trying to install, but iut refuses, because I do need to close iTunes before installing. Like duh, but there is no iTunes open, even no iTunes Helper.

not bad...
nice interface (but just different, not necessarily better).
parental controls! now i can protect myself! (oh wait, no "prevent bad music from playing" option).

a new smart shuffle feature.

nested playlists! (which i haven't tried yet).

and i can finally remove "podcasts" from the playlist menu...

time to turn up the volume...

So there isn't an iPod update to go along with it? Do the iPods support nested playlists or will we have to wait???

here's a fun one,
from the MAC OSX page at versiontracker:

Product Requirements:
Windows 2000/XP
500MHz Pentium class processor or better
256MB RAM
QuickTime 6.5.1 (included)
Latest Windows service packs recommended
Supported CD-R or DVD-R drive to burn CDs
DSL, cable modem, or LAN-based high-speed Internet connection for buying and streaming music

that IS a big change! windows only, i guess....

Arg. It's not a universal binary. Apple's pressuring developers to start making these binaries, and they arn't even making them.

What would the point be of releasing a Universal Binary, considering that one of the two platforms it runs on hasn't even been released yet? All it would do is bloat the download size.

weird new "fixed' time counter; shows elapsed AND remaining time...

a "reveal" button (looks like the bounceback arrow in safari); highlightss the current song in the main window...

and seems faster connecting to airtunes (altho that could just be my imagination...)

Apple is not pressuring developers to ship "these binaries" - only to build them and have them ready for the Mactel launch.

I found my answer at dealmac:
ATTN: SizzlingKeys users! / iTunes 5
Posted by: bigdog (IP Logged)
Date: September 7, 2005 02:20PM

Apple's iTunes 5 installer looks for any process ending in "iTunes.app". The SizzlingKeys process that runs in the background is named "SizzlingKeys4iTunes.app". Accordingly, your installer will tell you that iTunes is still running and you need to quit it.

Yes, it's lazy on Apple's part.

Yes, you can get around it. Go into the Sizzling Keys preference pane in System Preferences and turn it off. The iTunes installer should now work as expected.

Remember kids, you heard it here first.

I downloaded and installed iTunes 5 and I am experiencing problems with Party Shuffle. I had the same exact problems in v. 4.7. Basically there is no functionality in my Party Shuffle. It shows my entire library, and doesn't respond to any changes in options. I trashed the com.apple.itunes.plist file. Hitting refresh does nothing. What should I do?

Best thing about iTunes 5: Podcasts are now added to the library meaning that Smart Playlists can pick them up as Genre Contains Podcast. Yippee! This means that G1 iPod users can easily put podcasts on their iPod.

You STILL cannot order albums by Artist FOLLOWED BY Year!!!!

They still don't realise I want to see an artist's 1975 album AFTER their 1966 album!!

Music geeks my arse - clearly no-one at Apple has read or seen High Fidelity, let alone actually sat down and sorted their music collection!

See you for iTunes 6. I'll posted the exact same thing once again.

I wanted a rewrite, I expected one. The features are pretty lame, I could go through each one and dismiss them all entirely, other than nested playlists, which many people were waiting for but I don't use. I like the new look, it's cleaner, smaller, it's a bit angular but it's nice. I dislike how I'm using "Parental Controls" so I don't have to see the music store or podcasts. I like the increased control in the standard song shufflle.

I did expect more from 5.0, a rewrite in certain areas would have been welcomed. A good update, not what I was waiting for, but still good.

Just because. I'm sure dev's would love to have iTunes running speedily on their boxes instead of being a lagging POS through rosetta.

Oh and dload size isn't an excuse. It would only add a few more MB, which once compressed in the dmg would be negligible.

I agree! but if thats the worst thing about itunes I can live with it. I started playing with mp2's back in 1995 or so on OS7 with like 100MHz processor and maybe a 500M hard drive. things have come a long way.

That's not new.

The new iTunes:
-It's a big change but I love the new interface. It's about time it got a face lift (not that it REALLY needed one, but change is good).
-Improved search is good!
-Elapsed AND remaining time is good!
-Shuffle by Artist OR Album OR Grouping (this is new, right?) is very good indeed. Similar to feature on iPods.
-Smart Shuffle slider is good though I never had many complaints with the randomizer.
-VBR AAC is good!
-Playlist Folders are good!
-Where are these "over 1,000 Album Reviews"?
-ROKR E1 syncing is good if I were to get that phone.
-"The Complete Harry Potter" is not a feature, Apple.
