some of the icons on my desktop (i.e. the mac HD) automatically switch back to certin places (the upper right hand corner) but i would like it to stay in the upper left even after a restart etc. is this possible?

In finder press command + j and uncheck 'keep arranged by'.

You can do that, but everytime you download something, the Mac OS will dump it on the upper RIGHT-HAND side again.

Didn't know that, I set my browser (and Sitesucker) to download direct to my 'Downloads' folder which I set up in my Home folder, and access from the dock.

That's if the icon appears at all!

Every afternoon this week the Finder has stopped showing the files I save.

Since moving or renaming in the Terminal doesn't help, the only way is to search for it in Spotlight and - perhaps ironically - choose 'Reveal In Finder'.

Roll on 10.4.3.
