I'm interested in getting a Mac mini, but not until they go Core 2 Duo. Anyone got any idea of when that might be?

January 9th.

I'd expect a quiet C2D update to the Mini before then, though. Probably in the next few weeks.

I don't think there will be an update to the Mac mini's until AFTER Macworld.

They were just updated with the iMac's and that was only a couple of months ago.

Great! I can wait a couple of months, seeing as this will be my first new Mac in over four years. I'm thinking of maxing out the mini's RAM, buying the new Dell 20" widescreen monitor (a steal at £270) to go with it, plus 300GB additional storage in the form of a LaCie mini Hard Drive & Hub. In terms of performance, how do you think this system will compare to the latest 20" iMac Core 2 Duo? I realise that the iMac has a more powerful graphics card, dual monitor support, space for 3GB RAM, etc. and probably represents better value for money, but I love the mini's small footprint, enhanced portability and the idea of having a seperate screen (which is HDCP compliant and can be connected to an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player or XBox 360).

Any thoughts, perhaps from people who own (or have owned) both?

The current Mac mini 1.83 GHz vs. the current iMac 20" 2.16 GHz, you will notice a big difference when using the machines.

The iMac is a Core 2 Duo with 4 MB of L2 cache, a faster hard drive, dedicated graphics card, and of course 330 MHz faster per core.

Read the update posted at the bottom of the article now.

I think the EARLIEST their will be an update is at Macworld, but I honestly think it will be a couple months after. Unless they want to get 64-bit across the line in which case they will do it as soon as possible.
