Seriously.
He just had radiation treatment for hyperthyroid, and according to the discharge instructions:
Four hours of contact will give me a year's dose of radiation.
If I dispose of his litter (and other contents) in the garbage, it'll set off an alarm at the disposal site, and I'll get a knock on the door from the NRC.

You never know unless you try. When they come by and you open the door, have some weird centrifuges spinning in the background.

Why are you knocking on my door? I put all that in my neighbor's dumpster. They're obviously the problem.

When my cat had that procedure, they kept him at the vet clinic until he was "no longer a hazard." The treatment worked very well, too.

I hear it's some good gravy.
Did they really keep your cat for 17 days or do they figure you can take it in Texas?

Only about 5 days. I believe dosage - and thus hazard time - are based on the cat's size. Mine was relatively small at the time. Hyperthyroidism tends to do that, and he had never been that big to begin with.
One thing to note: high levels of thyroid hormone can mask other diseases, or even suppress them. My cat had bladder cancer at the same time as the thyroid problem, but no symptoms until his thyroid was under control. Chat with your vet about what could perhaps be hiding behind the thyroid symptoms when you get a chance.

I most certainly will. Luckily we caught this really early, so he's been asymptomatic.
Here, they kept him for four days and say to keep up the Silkwood routine for two weeks.

Without thyroid symptoms, he's probably not had anything hiding. Enjoy the nuclear disposal experience.

Your cat looks great. I take it you didn't get busted by the EPA for cleaning his litter box...

I don't always cough up hairballs, but when I do, I prefer your slippers.

If I felt it didn't need context to show it full respect, I would sig that in a second.

So far, so good. It took me about an hour to get the leftover litter down though.

This thread led to a very odd dream in which I was trying to take a dead, radioactive cat through airport security. The TSA did not approve.

While he was radioactive, did you put the proper radiation stickers on him?

I think it'll be safe to pet him when his eyes stop glowing.
