If I understand Applecare correctly, you cannot buy Applecare for a display only. But... I'm contemplating a 30" LCD purchase and think that Applecare might be a wise investment - just in case. What do you guys think about buying a Mac Mini, the display, and Applecare on the same invoice? That would permit Applecare on the display, right?

So... I'm basically buying Applecare for the display for $649. Worthwhile?

Hmmm... thinking out loud here. Kind of an expensive insurance policy for a $3000 display. I suppose if somebody in my household could get something out of the Mini it wouldn't be that big a deal. I get that it could be problematic if I sold the Mini and somebody else bought Applecare for it.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure about that, but i'd say you could probably just return the macmini the next day right?

Damn good question!
I just got a dual 2.7 G5 and wanted desperately to get a 30" as well but couldn't swing the whole thing financially. I called Apple and asked if I bought the 30" BEFORE getting AC for the G5 if the display would be covered and at first they said yes! Sounded great!

This sounded too good to be true so I called back and talked to an AC specialist who clarified and said that, under no circumstances, would a display be covered if it was not on the same invoice as the G5.

This puts me in the same boat as you. I asked if I could buy a separate AC plan just for the display but was told "No." This makes zero sense to me as the display lists for more then G5!

I hadn’t thought of your idea but now I'm gonna consider that as an option. My concern is what happens if you get rid of the mini afterwards. I have no use for it and don't want to lose the AC.

Please lemme know what you end up doing.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.

I guess you just have to find another mac member going to the store to make a purchase? Maybe you could meet up and buy it on the same invoice? You can split it between two cards...

I would try to find a member here looking to buy a new powermac, who you could meet up with at the Apple store.

Maybe you offer $50 to him for putting your item on the same invoice, and in exchange you get a photocopy of the invoice, along with Applecare.

I'll be buying a new powerbook after the keynote in september, and I live in Los Angeles, even if you couldn't come to the Apple Store, we could probably work something where I'd purchase the display on my card or we'd buy it online and you'd pay me with paypal or a credit card payment processor.

I was in the Schaumburg, IL Apple store this afternoon and asked the guy behind the counter if I could buy a mini, the 30 LCD, and Applecare. He got it right away, grinned, and said he wasn't sure. He went to ask the manager - the manager came out and said "Absolutely. No problem." I'd probably want to get something in writing from him on Apple letterhead before I did this - just because everybody knows the mini ain't gonna drive the 30".

Interestingly enough they had a refurb 30" for 2499$. Didn't bother taking the time to look at it or ask questions about it - but something to think about.

It did get me thinking, though. I *don't* have to buy from the Apple store. What's the best price you guys have seen on a 30" from a retailer? Gotta figure 27 or 2800. If I do it right, I won't pay tax (think Amazon) - which means my end result might be as if I paid $2500 at the store.

Thoughts?
