I mentioned this in another post, but no one answered.

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't Doom 3 the fourth game in the Doom series? Let's see Doom/The Ultimate Doom Doom 2 Final Doom Doom 3.

According to my math Doom 3 is the fourth game in the series. What am I missing?

iirc, Ultimate Doom was plain old Doom with a bunch of extra levels.

Myself, I'm more interested in the new Wolfenstein.

I know that The Ultimate Doom was just Doom with a fourth "episode". I don't consider it a separate game. But, Final Doom is a separate game. In fact, it was the third game in the series. This makes Final Doom Doom 3 and Doom 3 Doom 4.

Am I missing something? Is there something illegitimate about Final Doom?

Giving Final Doom credit as a separate game in the Doom series is akin to saying the same thing for Tomb Raider Gold, Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition, Railroad Tycoon II: Gold, etc. It's not approrpiate since it's not a completely new game or even something you'd call an expansion pack. It's a re-release of the original title with some extras thrown in, and it's not given credit as a title in the series. Therefore, Doom III is still Doom III.

Final Doom is not a rerelease with some extras. It is a separate game. It does not include Doom or Doom 2 nor does it require you to own one of these games in order to for you to run it. It does look and play the same as Doom and Doom 2, however.

I guess this means that John Carmack is bad at counting.

I think it's not so much a numbering convention as a naming convention.

Final and Ultimate weren't numbered. Doom and Doom II were, so I suppose Carmack is resuming that naming system.

Whatever. As long as it doesn't suck.

The Ultimate Doom shouldn't have been numbered. It is the first Doom with a fourth episode.

Final Doom, however, should have been numbered. At least in plot, it is the direct sequel to Doom 2
