I posted earlier about loseing 25% battery life overnight on my MacBook Pro...

well I think i've found the problem, which creates another problem.

my computer will not go to sleep when I close the lid. I've let it sit for 10 minutes waiting for the light to pulsate and it won't.

in order to get it to sleep I have to open it up, and hit [apple+option+eject] and then it takes about 10 seconds for the light to start "breathing".

what would cause this? I can't find an option in the prefernces to "not sleep when lid is closed".. It is not set to allow networks, or bluetooth or anything to wake it up....

I'm confused

my first guess was bluetooth but you ruled that out ... check your latch is my second guess. when you press apple option eject and shut the lid does it wake back up?

the latch works fine, the screen goes black, it just doesn't go to sleep.

no, when I do the apple/option/eject the screen will go black, and when I close the lid the light will start pulsating. when I open the computer it wakes back up like normal.

have you done the firmware updates http://search.info.apple.com/?q=MacB...o&type=kbdload

when you shut the lid without Apple Opt. Eject, does the sleep light come on and not breathe? or does it not come on at all?

Yeah, I have all of the new firmware.

the light stays solid like it is transferring the memory to the harddrive or the LCD is off. but it never starts to "breathe"

the only thing i have left to guess is Repair Permissions. which i'm sure you've already tried. next thing i would do is go to the closest Apple store, or call Apple support. sorry i'm not more help

no, not yet, I was kind of worried to do that.

Why worry? It is easy to do and it can't do any harm to your MacBook. Those steps clear many power / charging / strange behavior.

Sherlocks applecare says use those as a last resort. so thats is why I waited

well, now another problem... when I wake from sleep, it won't automatically join my network.. even though I have it set as the #1 prefered network... I'm confused.

I had that...do you have various networks available? If so, delete the other networks and start again, if not create a new profile and try that.

By new profile I mean a new network profile not user account.

I have had a similar issue of my MBP not sleeping when I close the lid. Resetting the PMU fixed it. Thanks for the advice!

I've tried both the PMU and the PRAM, but neither worked!
I select sleep from the Apple menu, the unit goes to sleep for about 10 seconds, then it wakes back up. If I close the lid, the same thing happens, except it starts cycling from sleep to awake, to sleep and on and on.
I called Apple support and they were no help. I reinstalled OSX and that did not work.
I will be taking it to the apple store tomorrow.
BTW, this is my third Macbook Pro 15". The first had a bent screen, the second overheated all the time. This one will not sleep!

I'm sorry you've gone through so many MBPs, I've never had a serious problem with mine. . the non sleeping thing was fixed with the PMU reset.....

I bought my MacBook Pro on August 1. After executing the automatic transfer function, transferring everything over from my five-year old PBG4, everything seemed fine until the next day, when I was unable to manually put the computer to sleep from the Apple Menu command. When I went to restart the computer, the screen went to a blank blue, and the progress gear would spin endlessly. I would have to execute a force-shutdown.

Twice -- once when the computer was manually put to sleep, and once on auto -- the battery drained down while I was running errands with the MBP in my bag and the system was blazing hot.

When I took the computer to the Genius Bar, I was told that the automatic transfer feature was not recommended using the G4, and that I would need to erase the Pro drive and perform a clean re-install of the system software and applications, and then drag over my preferences, media files, and documents.

Well, I did this -- with reservations -- and the problem persisted. I exchanged the computer last Thursday, taking home a brand new MBP. After using the computer for two days for browsing and e-mail, the problem has started on the new machine. Yesterday, the battery and heat situation also started again.

Resetting the PRAM hasn't fixed the problem, but I'm going to try the PMU and hope for the best. I really don't want to exchange machines again, but I can't live with these problems.

Well, it seems that the problem was being caused by the ExpressCard slot. I had a multi-format reader in the expresscard slot.

I went to the Genius Bar, they downloaded an update and voila, the problem disappeared!

I did a software update for the Express Card, and it didn't fix my problems. And last night, I was able to put the computer to sleep, but the battery was drained to zero this morning.

argh!!!! i did the same thing, without asking anyone, and used the migration assistant. i'm convinced i transferred something that doesn't work properly on the new macbook (had a pb g4). i've been afraid apple would tell me that it wouldn't work if i took it to the bar.

i am going to try the resets mentioned here, my two problems:

1. the same thing you have, it wakes up from sleep in my bag randomly and nearly burns up

but even MORE frustrating:

2. it locks up solid, no warning, no log messages, just freezes with the screen fully lit, video looks normal, the machine is just unresponsive to mouse or keyboard (or network, ssh, anything) and i have to do a hard reset

however, no it won't go to sleep and that just started after the last software update i installed.

I had previously sent back my MBP because of the infamous CPU whine/buzzing high pitched noise. When I received my MPB back, it no longer had the whine, but it would not go to sleep when I closed the lid. And, when I put the machine to sleep through the apple menu, it would sleep, but when I'd close the lid, it would either wake up or the pulsating light would still pulsate, but only very dimly.me

I called APPLE. They had me try the PMU and PRAM resets, didn't work. They had me reinstall an archive copy of the OS, didn't work.

I sent the machine back to apple once more. I just got it back today and it's fixed! According to the paperwork, the service description says "016-0014 RESEAT: CABLE/CONNECTOR". This made sense as the apple specialist on the phone told me that maybe a cable was not connected to the new logic board that was put in to remove the cpu whine.

Bottom line: if the resets don't work or the reinstallation of the OS, then it's probably a hardware problem. Call Apple!

Ok, I have an iMac G5 (original version) that won't sleep after time-out (set in energy saver). Also, I had set up a combination key to sleep the computer, but that stopped working as well. I have tried everything I could find info on or think of. Please help if you have more ideas. Here is as complete a list as I can come up with:

- Reset SMU
- Reset PRAM
- Trashed com.apple preference files related to power management
- Unplugged every cable from computer (except power)
- Killed many processes at both root and user level (I was a bit fearful to kill some because I wasn't sure what they do).
- Restarted computer and let it sit at the login screen - no sleep (so its a root-level/system-wide deal
- Uninstalled HP printer/scanner software
- Reset the Silver Keeper wake-from-sleep settings
- Returned all Energy Saver settings to default
- Turned off "wake in enet admin" and "wake on ring"
- Pulled my hair out with frustration.

Anyone else got any ideas? I am at a loss and very frustrated.

Have you installed anything (other than the scanner) that would install a hardware driver? Look through /System/Library/Extensions for something that doesn't look like Apple put there. A stupid driver may be causing it to stay awake.

Maybe that Silver Keeper is the culprit - remove it completely.

did the same thing again today, all accept it almost caused damage to itself.

I got done at work, closed the lid, and put it in the back (I don't normally wait for the light to start "breathing" cause since the first post I have never had a problem with it not.)

anyways, It just decided it didn't want to go to sleep...so I had it in my bag with no air circulation, all the way home in my car.... (about 45 minutes) when I got home and turned my car off, I though the air conditioner blower motor was still on (it was that loud.) so I started messing with my car, I opened the door to see if it would stop then, but no. I turned the car back on and then off and nothing... so then I bent down to see where it was coming from and I noticed my bag was in that general direction. I had to hold the power button down to get it to shut off... and then I took the battery out so that it wouldn't blow up.

It wouldn't start up for 45 minutes....

what a stupid problem... I only had mail, firefox, and address book open.
