I found a good deal on a MacBook Pro 17" 2010 and would like to get some feedback on this particular model so I can ponder about it.
Are there any well-known issues with it, recalls…?
Is the battery user serviceable or should one bring it to Apple to get it replaced.?
Was the NVIDIA GeForce GT330M any good.?

Anything else I should be aware of such as RAM topping at 8 GB (fact) display wearing down too fast (fear), 2011 model being way a better value, et cetera…

The 2011 models are significantly faster (in terms of cpu performance) than the 2010 models. I was a bit unlucky and I had to get a new machine in 2010 rather than 2011, so I missed out on four cores (rather than two), each of which is faster than the ones I have.

If I were you, I'd opt for a 2011 MacBook Pro.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Agreed entirely.

When the low-end 13" MacBook Pro is faster than the previous-generation high-end 17" MacBook Pro, the previous-generation one really has to be a *sensational* deal to be worth considering.

Feb. 2011 (Thunderbolt) models or later, FTW.

Agreed Feb. 2011 (Thunderbolt) models or later. It will take 2x8 GB RAM.

An SSD is strongly recommended, via Apple or via retrofit.
