When attempting to install an application on my MBP I got a message stating that the disk needed repair. So I tried Disk Utility. Just before competion it spit out an error message with "...underlying task failed..."

The next step was to try running Disk Utility from the installer CD. No go. Same error.

Tech Tools Pro said the drive is OK.

Back to Disk Utility. The same error message came up.

Then I tried Safe Boot mode. That approach wouldn't even allow the computer to fully start up -- it quit before the Tiger screen with 'Safe Boot.' Tried it three times. Same result.

Then I tried fsck in Single User mode. No luck. After the line reading: "**Checking Catalog File." it says 'Illegal name.'

Then, at the end, under '**Repairing disk.' it says 'Cannot repair disk.'

Anyone see anything I missed or alternative approaches to fixing my drive?

Thx.

Well, now, Tech Tools gave it a clean bill of health? I don't understand the illegal name code. You already know you need a good backup, get an external drive, install the OS on it, boot from it and SuperDuper your hard drive over to it. Reformat, run DU again for fun, SuperDuper everything back.

DiskWarrior fixes all.

An illegal name could mean a duplicate name in the same directory, or a name that includes illegal characters.

Thx to all for the replies. We think alike -- I ordered an upgrade for my copy of Disk Warrior shortly after my initial post (old one was not Intel processor worthy).

I've seen this problem before and Disk Warrior fixed it with no problem.

I had the same issue due to overlapped files, DW 3 couldn't fix it, DW 4 did it.
