Well I wouldn't call Signs a "bod" movie even though mel Gibson is in good shape.

My fav this year is Episode 2 which is a surprise and I hated the sht out of Episode 1.

I haven't seen any bad movies this year because I avoid them i.e. master of Disguise.

I've only seen a few movies this year, but Star Wars Attack of the Clowns was definitely the worst. How can such technically perfect movie have such a sucky script? The Yoda fight was not only the best scene, but the only good scene at all.

That's OK citizens of the world, sit back on your asses and let the Americans make the tough choices for you...

I enjoyed the hell outta episode 2, which was odd considering how boring episode 1 was.

Don't want to see goldmember, the franchise is running dry Mike.

Waiting to see if triple x will be any good or not, cheesy action movies always crack me up.

I hate to be the arse to point out, but the special effects in Episode II SUCKED, thats right you heard me.... THEY SUCKED. why ? it all looked like special effects, and that is not the purpose of special effects. Special Effects should augment "reality" and make the connection seamless. Good examples of special effects would have to be MOST of the effects in Lord Of The Rings(not all).

And besides the special effects in EPII, everything else about it sucked... "i dont like sand, sand is coarse and rough, your soft and smoothe". did they hire an out of work porn script writer for this movie ? Acting ?..... i know computer generated characters who do a better job, they all looked like robots. Not to mention the cheesiest screen chemistry in the history of motion picture.

But anyway, keep adding the best and worst of Summer 2002.

Cheers.

P.S.>> What do u get when you take a British spy, remove the charisma, the romance the debonaire agent, and the international mystery, and replace it with a bald muscle clad red neck, who can barely speak, and give him big guns and explosives ? here's a clue.... it begins with "Tripple" and end with "X".

lol, good point but those Bond flicks are damn hokey too...

"You expect me to talk?"

"No Mr. Bond, I expect you to DIE!"

Plus great names like Pussie Galore and Long Toe (or whatever that Chinese guy's name was in Goldfinger). I could rant forever on OHMSS too, but that'd be a low blow

It's no wonder the Austin Powers franchise has done so well

We took the kids to a double feature at the drive in last month. Lilo & Stich was pretty good but Scooby Doo was terrible. Even the kids, 7 years old and 3 years old, knew it sucked. We left within the first 1/2 hour.

i must respectfully disagree on the comparison of AotC and LotR's special effects. Star Wars' special effects constructed an entire world in which the people were the only real things. For the most part, LotR constructed more fake things, inside a real world shot in New Zealand. That gives it something of an unfair advantage. i personally think that the final action sequences in Episode II were incredible, giving a ton of eye candy, in an insanely chaotic battle, yet never leaving you confused as to what happening. Compare that with most modern action movie scenes, and it is an underappreciated plus. i didn't care for the loony tracking camera shots going into the underground area with the orcs in LotR. i thought those were gimmicky, whereas Star Wars used more conventional shots. this is just my opinion, mind you; i'm not trained or anything. The only *bad* effects shots in AotC are where anakin is riding the animal.

As for the 'i don't like sand' dialog, yeah, i hated that line, too, but it makes much more sense with a few more lines between him and padme that were in the script, but cut out of the movie; something about her lying on the sand on that island in the lake. Honestly, that scene and the fireplace scene are really the only ones i have a problem with, dialogue-wise. No one is saying that episode II's dialog or delivery matches that of lord of the rings, or even spider-man; it's not supposed to, they're different movies, and different types of movies. But apart from those few exceptions, the feel of the characters and their interaction is much closer to that of the original trilogy then it is episode 1, and that's a Good Thing.

I agree...Bond must have had the best one liners in movie history...

The 'cunning linguist' line from Tomorrow Never Dies, was probably the best of the modern ones...However Connery and Moore (much as I hate to say it!) have it wrapped up...

In one of the space based bonds (moonraker?)

M - "What's Bond doing?"
Q - " I believe he is attempting re-entry..."

Sexist? yes. Masogenistic? Probably. Funny?

Peace,

Marc

Worst is the scene on Naboo when Anakin is with Padme, and is seen riding one of those huge wild creature things, and pretends to be injured when he falls off...

The effects just don't look even remotely real...I cringed. Even more so than at the script.

I have no gripe with the movie, and I actually really enjoyed it, but one or two of the CGI scenes didn't work at all...

In fact, when you look back at the original cut of Star Wars et al, and then the Re-Mastered versions, IMHO the CGI really detracts from the films, and for me ruins them. The realism is removed.

Episode 2 is still a good movie, but i did prefer the Pre CGI Lucas films more...

Peace,

Marc

xXx is a great movie, I recommend it to everyone.. It is similar to James Bond, but xXx defines his own style. refer to this thread to hear what I have to say about the movie. There are some spoilers.

Road to Perdition was also one of the best I've seen so far.. I haven't seen Austin Powers 3 yet, but I look forward to it..

Signs get a

Episode 2 was better than Episode 1..

Spiderman was nothing special..

But what do I know?

Hmmm

Road to Perdition

Goldmember

Clones

MiB2

Minority Report

Signs

Reign of Fire

Really, there haven't been that many actually good films this year in my opinion...just a bunch of pretty ok ones, some real stinkers, and Road to Perdition which was actually really, really good.

Clones was better than Phantom, but still not a great film. And about the effects, I was completely blown away when I learned a few weeks after I saw it that they didn't make a single clonetrooper uniform in real life; they were all CGI.

Then again, it was the writing that ruined it. NEVERMIND!

yes. now, as an experiment, compare the CGI in Matrix, Terminator 2, Dinosaur, Monsters inc., Jurassic Park to Episode II. I mean...c'mon. Aladar moves believably and EXPRESSIVELY in Dinosaur, the lighting and textures are plausible. Compare this to the fry cook in episode II and Jar Jar.
If they could make Sully's hair look more real than real in Monsters Inc., They could have AT LEAST had obi wan look at the right focal point when talking with CGI creatures.

I really have limited in-theatre movie watching with my three year old, so this is all I've seen this year or so in the theatre:

Return to Neverland (thumbs down--incredible waste of animator's time, and desecration of the memory one of the best animated films ever)
Lilo and Stitch (thumbs up--all the way up)
LOTR (mixed...overall thumbs up)
Spy Kids 2 (thumbs up--a fun romp)

I'm sorry this doesn't quite fit into all summer movies...i stretched the time frame a bit.

Reign of fire - Sucked!
Minority Report - was good
Austin Powers 3- was very funny, yet not Austin Powers like.
K19:Widowmaker - was good, prolly not everyones type of movie Though.
Men in Black 2 - Not very good, I liked the first better.
Signs - Great! Nifty style, and the director is in it!
Lilo and Stitch - As Lerkfish said: "(thumbs up--all the way up)"

Also, Rent Amelie. I loved it!

well, lets be more general and just say BAD special effects...because I just rented "time machine" and the morlocks ground the movie to a halt...and they were for the most part standard animatronic effects...but REALLY REALLY BAD ONES.

I much prefer a guy in a suit to some GCI alien. Movies were more quality in the early 90's and late 80's because of this. Alien, Aliens, and I'll even admit star wars was decent for this argument. But this reliance on special effects for EVERYTHING in many action movies is just silly. I doubt there was a single scene in Episode 1 or 2 without computer animations added in. (And computer animations are so horribly obvious!)

they CAN be done well, but where they can't...it should be bleepin obvious to the director if it is to the audience!

That's why i for one like the SFX where you cant tell the difference between reality and CG. Andi think so far the best SFX ive seen is in LOTR.

I mena when you watch the movie, you dont think..."cool, they must have spent a lot on time on that" or "now thats what SFX should be like". it's just part of the movie. And with SWEPII, when you see that jar jar character, you wonder what the hell these ppl were thinking, and then the rainbow skinned rhino and a giant mantis/spider come out, and it looks so "cartooney" that you just have to hang your head in shame and wonder why you wasted $7.50 on it.

I've seen some awfully disapointing movies this summer. They were so awful that I wanted to forget their names...

Most recently it was Signs, and I wasn't impressed by it at all. MIB2 sucked too.
