It will probably run, but don't expect too much out of it,

Will it run? Probably. Will it run well? Probably not until they actually write a G5 optimized core. Personally I wouldn't bother until the client is optimized.

I just got a delivery confirmation on my new Dual G5 at work.

It is expected to arrive at my desk in the next two weeks! I will be glad to test any clients for you for benchmarking purposes. Just let me know what you need to have done and remember that I have only run SETI, folding@home and dFold so I may not have any idea of how to do what you need done.

Word on irc.ditributed.net is that a core for PPC970 has been finished, but it's not optimized, so expect about the same as a G4, clock for clock, if not less.

I don't think any G5's have acually been benchmarked, yet, or if the client is even available for downloading with a G5 core, yet.

We won't see any good optimization for the G5's until after Panther is released. It is essential to unleash the inherent power of the G5. (10.2.7 allows Jaguar to run, but with no real optimization) After that, then additional performance improvements will come as a result of optimizing apps. This will also be true of DC clients. The potential is there for amazing performance, but it is not yet realized because of the current OS and the apps themselves. It won't be long though. RC-5 will probably be one of the first to produce an optimized client or core after Panther is released. It really does no good to produce one until the OS can support it.

Some other projects (F@H in particular) are looking at.

FWIW, there is a pre-release dnet client 2.9006-485 on the pre-release page: http://www1.distributed.net/download/prerelease.php

From CHANGES.txt;

new: decunix: cpu temperature detection
new: macosx: use AppleCPUthermo to read CPU temperature (#3315)
imp: macosx: use latest gcc 3.3 to compile client and OGR cores
new: macosx: properly recongize the PowerPC 970 (G5) (#3310)
new: ppc: new rc5-72 core for PowerPC 970 (G5) by Didier Levet

Will we see any speed increases on G4s with the gcc 3.3 compile?

I'll run it on the Cube overnight. It'll be Monday before I can get to the "big iron." <-- that's a joke.

i tried the common OS X client on the 1.6 and it seemed to go really slow, seeing that it was in my unis computer store i didn't want to hang around and see what kind of speed it would put out, but i am guessing not much more then a simple 800 G4

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!
