Apple is planning to unveil a 27-inch iMac with a 5120x2880 Retina display at its October press event, a new report claims -- citing an anonymous source. The computer will allegedly make a switch from Nvidia video cards to AMD, and offer a 4GHz Intel i7-4790K Haswell CPU as one configuration option. The 21.5-inch iMac isn't expected to make the jump to Retina graphics, at least not until Intel Broadwell processors launch -- which is most likely in early 2015.

Apple has so far been conservative about bringing Retina technology to Macs. The only line with Retina support so far is the MacBook Pro; the Mac Pro can support 4K monitors, but Apple itself has yet to produce a 4- or 5K-capable Thunderbolt Display. A Retina MacBook Air has, like the iMac, only been rumored. Desktop-level Retina support is especially challenging, since it requires far higher resolutions than a laptop and will likely add considerable cost to the unit, necessitating a significant price hike.
