Imagination Technologies has announced a second reduction in its workforce in as many months, as the company attempts to cut costs and restructure itself. Following on from an announcement in February for the loss of 150 jobs, the producer of the PowerVR graphics architecture used in the iPhone and iPad intends to lay off another 200 staff around the world, as the company endures a general slowdown in the semiconductor market.

The redundancies will mostly consist of positions in "non-core" sections of the business. The "core" three business areas, made up of graphics and multimedia with PowerVR, MIPS processing, and its Ensigma connectivity business, will be untouched by the reductions. Ars Technica notes the company has 1,700 employees in total, with the announced layoffs equalling a workforce reduction of around 20 percent.

The cuts are being made with the intention of reducing its total operating costs even further than it announced last month. Previously, the company advised its restructuring would save approximately £15 million ($21.7 million) in the next financial year ending April 2017, with changes made by April 2016. The new changes intends to reduce its cost base by an extra £12.5 million ($$18.1 million) on a net annualized basis, again by April 2017.

Despite the cost-saving measures and job losses, along with asset write-downs, Imagination still wants to strengthen its core businesses. Investment in its PowerVR arm alone will cost around £2 million ($2.9 million), with the company also "actively seeking to fill over 50 roles" in that area.
