Well the time will soon come for applying for college, and my dream has been to get away from it all and study in Europe. Having traveled to Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, and the Czech Republic and also being in my third year of German and my fifth year of Spanish, I'm assuming it wouldn't be much of a culture shock. I'm looking to specialise in linguistics and international communication, hopefully while studying and living in Germany or Austria. I've been checking out International University of Bremen (an English language institute) and also Freie Universitt Berlin (which would be free for an American student, however at this time I wouldn't pass the German Language Proficiency Exam [DSP I]). Does anyone have academic experience abroad?

yup, i do. i've studied in both the us and germany, and unless you want to learn german, i'd say get your degree at a us school. there isn't a single thing about german universities that's superior (other than being almost completely "free").
if you wanna share what else you like doing, i might be able to point you in a direction. obviously studying abroad is always a good thing in and of itself.

Psychonaut:
It's rather telling that the best seminar I ever attended in American Lit/Cultural Studies at Hamburg University was held by an American guest professor.
That said, if you have even the slightest inclination to spend some time abroad: DO IT.
I also doubt that my experiences at Hamburg Uni's AmLit are comparable to the IU Bremen - especially since I've found music studies at my uni much more satisfying already.

Psychonaut, are you planning to get your degree at a German university, or just do a Junior Year Abroad program? Back in the late seventies I did a Junior Year program at the University of Hamburg, and it was excellent. I would highly recommend it, not for the academics, but for the experience. The program was run by the American college that I was attending, and I went with a group of about 10. We all lived in different dorms around Hamburg. It was quite an experience for me. My dorm had more foreigners than Germans, so I got to know people from all over the world. There was a large contingent from Iran, Turkey (including one suspected terrorist), Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Also on my hall were several Africans (Congo, Guinea), a Pole who had fled Poland illegally, and several Indonesians of Chinese ethnicity.
It was fascinating to talk to these people. And a learning experience. For the first time I got to see how other people view Americans firsthand.
Hamburg was a great city to be a student in. As a student in Germany one got all sorts of discounts to cultural events (opera, plays, concerts). Public transportation is wonderful. And in the 2-month break between semesters you have time to get a rail pass and travel all over Europe, which I did.
I recommend it. The program I did was run by Smith College in Massachusetts. A German professor from Smith travelled to Hamburg with us, and was there to advise us about course selection, give us intensive language review, help with bureaucratic matters, orient us to our new city, and also arrange fun stuff like parties and trips. Excellent program.
