Right now, the two teams with the best records are Slovakia and Finland, both at 5-0-0. Sweden and Canada both have 3 wins and 2 losses. The also both have 15 goals, but Sweden has 12 goals against them, vs. Canada's 9. OTOH, Finland has only 2 goals against them this entire tournament, compared to Slovakia's 8.

While Sweden is definitely a contender and I think they may get a medal, I don't see any reason that would suggest that they are likely to go gold.

I'm still rooting for Canada, but Finland looks pretty damn good at the moment, and for Canada to get into the finals they will likely have to beat Finland (after beating Russia). The only thing I will say is that if Finland does not get a medal, I will be surprised.

I think Canada's going to have a hard slog against Russia today.

Agreed. Russia's team is younger and faster.

However, I'm still optimistic for Canada. More mature and well-rounded.

EDIT:

Sweden over Switzerland, 6-2.

Canada shut out of the game, and out of the medals.

2-0 Russia > Canada

Well, USA isn't ranked high.

Canada was ranked number one, but they just didn't play all that well this Olympics. Canada looked slow. And Bertuzzi's stupid penalty this game certainly didn't help things (nor did the goal called back).

OK. Go Finland! Although Mats plays for my city so perhaps I should cheer for Sweden...

Hockey is certainly not a North American game. It is played in all Nordic countries and quite well.

I have heard that Canada did not play as a team that is why they kept on loosing.

Czech Republic > Slovakia - 3:1

So, the semifinals are:

Czech vs. Sweden
Russia vs. Finland

Canada didn't play well as a team. They were not used to the wide open play and didn't seem like they had the speed needed. Usually they get better as the tournament progresses, but this time they didn't.

I was definitely impressed with Switzerland's goaltending in their game against Canada a few days ago though. Canada had 49 shots on Switzerland's goal, yet Canada was still shut out.

I'm feeling awful. I haven't felt this bad since 1998 when Lindros hit the crossbar.

Jag vet att Du är och förblir vad du var.

Jag städs vill dig tjäna mitt älskade land,

Kiitos!

Was a pretty good game IMO. Although it's so long since I've been able to watch ice hockey live on the tele that I almost have forgotten the rules.

The Finns should feel really good about their tournament : they played with a lot of heart and determination. There was not much difference between Sweden and Finland today. What a good hockey game it was, and what a great tournament! Here is to hope the NHL keeps shutting down evey 4 years for the Olympics.
And on top of that three Red Wings score for Sweden!

The best part is that I just read Sweden overtook Canada for no. 1 in world rankings.

How the hell does THAT work?! Canada has won pretty much every major tournament since the 2002 Olympics. They play poorly at this one and Sweden replaces them?

Heh heh....

Finland played a great game, they just couldnt edge out Sweden.
Luckily there were Flyers players on both teams, and both did sensationally. Nittymakki is by far one of the best goalies we've seen in a while, obviously not as good as lundquist tho.

Sweden was #2 in the world prior to the XX games (http://www.iihf.com/news/Ranking2005.pdf) and they got an ton of points for winning it all.

It seems like a really strange rating system (example: 1200 points for the winner, 860 for 14th place). I also think our 2002 win has dropped off (or is worth next to nothing now).

Don't worry, we'll reclaim the top spot soon enough.

Updated point standings after the Olympics.

1 Sweden--4,030
2 Canada--3,940
3 Czech Republic--3,930
4 Slovakia--3,805
5 Finland--3,765
6 Russia--3,725
7 USA--3,575
8 Switzerland--3,525
9 Latvia--3,335
10 Germany--3,270

Since 2002 we've won...

Under 18: 1 (2003)
World Championship: 2 (2003, 2004)
Under 20 (World Juniors): 2 (2005, 2006)
CANADA Cup: 1 (2004) [I don't think this counts in the IIHF though].

Since 2002, Sweden has won...

Olympics: 1 (2006)

That's it.

Those rankings are stupid.

Under 18 and under 20 don't count, imho, if that is anything like the soccer rankings. So you are left with the 2 world championships . Besides getting ousted so early in the Olympics probably did not help. But hey, these rankings are as useless as the soccer one. You should not really care about that.

It's ok, give it a few years, and the US will just dominate all so you won't have to worry about who is ranked 1st!
