Didn't ThinkSecret or Apple Insider cover this a few months back? (I know they are rumor sites) but weren't we expecting tabbed chatting in iChat? Now I look at this and there's no mention of it!

Nooooooo!

Tabbed iChat would be awesome. I don't know why Apple haven't implemented it yet. GAIM has it.

There were some tab window resources in the iChat package but they never amounted to anything.

Adium X, try it. I use iChat only for video chats. Other than that, this should be in the Apps forum.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I never understood the appeal of tabbed IM. While it makes sense for websites when you have many open on a small monitor, IM conversations are small and you can view the content of many at once. Why hide active conversations?

Because when you have 12" of screen real estate, and 12 open conversations.... Well, you get the point.

You carry on 12 active conversations at once?

I think one can talk semi-actively to maybe 3 other people; passive iChat conversations can easily be minimized to the Dock from which you will receive notifications if it becomes active again.

To each his own, though, I guess; Adium is always available.
