Chances of this happening?

Has Apple positioned the delay just enough beyond the back to school period that makes this near impossible?

I think they should do it. At least for the student purchases. Maybe a choice. Free iPod or free Leopard with the purchase of a new Mac.

I know which one I would pick. Course, I'm not a student...

I think it's entirely possible that all Macs bought after June will qualify. Not a sure thing, but possible.

I consider that a snow ball's chance in hell.

Apple is not going to be giving away Leopard to everyone who bought a computer for 4 months (June to October). Makes no fiscal sense and it bucks their prior history of having an extremely short free upgrade window.

The free upgrade window spans from the date the release date is announced until the release date.

As a retired Progrmmer, I will be very upset if no discount for a Leopard OS is not offered! After 20+ years of the Microsoft World, I purchased a Mac MINI YESTERDAY! If I am left out in the cold, This "switcher" will sour on Apple!

I'm sure they'd be devastated.

Then be prepared to be very unhappy, because you are not going to get a free upgrade or discount for an OS that isn't due to be released for another 2+ to 3 months.

No way.

The last times around it's always been that they announced a fixed release date about six weeks in advance with the note that all machines bought "starting today" would qualify for a system update for $20 shipping & handling.

I assume they'll announce a firm ship date in early September.

Student price for Tiger is still $69, and this has been a standard price for the OS for quite a while. There's no reason to think they'll change that when Leopard comes out-which is why I'm not worried about upgrade costs... Anyone who qualifies for the student discount (on software or hardware) but doesn't take advantage of it is doing himself or herself a disservice.

Oh please....for $129? THAT's going to "sour" you after 20+ years of the Microsoft World?

Doubt it.

Anybody that's paying attention knows that if you buy a Mac "yesterday", you're going to have to pay for Leopard.

Why? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Faculty and staff of schools get the same discount too. So, it's really an Education discount, not just a student discount.
