Damn, I want one of those. I saw a TV show with a couple polar bear brothers in the zoo and they were the cutest thing in the world to watch playing with each other. Like kittens on crack.

I love that bear. Shame on any "animal rights" nuts who want to kill him. One thing though, was I the only person to reverse the n and the u in the name Knut?

^^ yes, you were

The bear is adorable. While I certainly don't think he should be killed, I do think they do a bit of disservice by presenting him as a warm-and-walking teddy bear, rather than the wild animal he is -- he should be understood and appreciated in a richer way.

And how should they do this? Feed him a live chicken in public? The visitors in the zoo can also see his not so cute parents. So they know that these are wild animals.

Is Knut the same as Cnut? I.e. is this adorable little chap named after the very old king of England?

Am I the only one who thought the title meant to say "Nut publicly viewable in the Zoo"? I opened the thread, expecting to see a crazed idiot climbing the bars and eating bugs.

Here's the kind of antics we can only hope are in store for us and him when he gets older.

Knut is so heart-melting I wish scientists would alter polar bear genes to keep them at around that size. Then we could save the species by domesticating them.

So what is special about this bear? Is he not a regular polar bear? What is the big deal about his?

The big deal is that this is the first polar bear to be born in the Berlin zoo since 33 years. Apparently breeding in captivity is difficult, so this is a big success for the zoo. He's also unbearably cute.

Nobody wanted him killed. The tabloid "Bild" made that up. It was instantly denied, so the next day they headlined that they "saved" Knut.

For ****s sake. Don't any of you remember what happened to the temperaments of the legendary Klondike and Snow at the Denver zoo?

Hate to break it to you, but these cute widdle snuggly wuggly things grow up and can maul you at will. AT WILL.

Oh no! Now the man who raises Knut says he doesn't think the bear is cute, and sometimes he could throw him against the wall.

Yum!

Yes, and no. It’s the same name, but I don’t think the bear’s named after the king. Knut/Knud is a relatively common Scandinavian and German name—it simply means ‘knot’ in Old Norse (King Canute/Cnut/Knut was Danish).

News about Knut: he is now getting his canine teeth and has pain and is very tired. Today he was only 30 minutes in public and he might not be at all in the next days.
