I heard they got Internets in France sometime last year (it was on a AOL CD in a care package sent to destitute farmers from America - how thrilling!).

What's there to explain about finding the word "slut" offensive?

I'd say it's unusual to take offense to that word.

I wouldn't use it (or the German equivalent "Schlampe") around my daughter.

I don't think it has the same level of negative connotation here in the US at least, as it does there. It's not a positive term, but it's not all that vulgar either.

Big Mac is right. Schlampe is much stronger than slut. I know people who use slut in jest (like Besson did). Never heard Schlampe used that way. It's always used as a vulgar insult.

Got to agree with that. You can use slut in all kinds of situations (a female friend of mine freely confesses to being a shoe-slut) that have nothing to do with ill-judged sexual promiscuity.

It depends very much on the context and your relationship with that person.

To call a stranger "slut" will almost always be taken as an insult, since there is no relationship that would warrant the use purely out of jest.

Actually, having ruminated on this for a while, it occurs to me that people freely call *themselves* "Schlampe" in German too.

I'd still be extremely careful about calling somebody else that.

How would she have taken to YOU calling her a "slut"?

Good point. It would depend on the situation I'd think.

Hey, let's try this: Spheric, you're an organ-slut.
