As the title says, leopard boots quiet slowly and pauses on a blue-screen before showing my desktop. Can someone with some knowledge please check out this log and see if there is anything that looks suspicious!!

Code:

Do you have any nonstandard software installed?
Did it do this under 10.4?
What type of Leopard installation did you do -- upgrade, archive-install, or erase-install?

It didn't do it with 10.4 and i did an erase and install as there was a problem with the way that 10.4 had been installed so i couldnt upgrade.

What is classed as non-standard software?

It looks like a SharePoints share of your public folder is failing.

Sorry, I could have picked a better word. I should have said 3rd-party software, like Logitech software/drivers, Norton AV, etc. Software that may hook into your system at some level and have the potential to mess things up.

It points to your public folder. I'd take everything out of it and see if that helps at all.

Only thing in that folder was another folder called Drop Box with nothing in it. I deleted it and the problem remains!

Anymore ideas?

Thanks

What happens if you create a new user? If you auto-login to it (I assume you auto-login to your current user), is it any faster?

Tried that to no avail... still stalls on a blue screen for about 4 seconds!

You seem to be losing a whole lot of time when it gets to setting up your network. -

03/01/2008 19:18:29 configd[34] setting hostname to "richard-wigleys-macbook.local"
03/01/2008 19:18:33 org.ntp.ntpd[14] Error : nodename nor servname provided, or not known
03/01/2008 19:18:33 ntpdate[66] can't find host time.euro.apple.com

03/01/2008 19:18:33 ntpdate[66] no servers can be used, exiting
03/01/2008 19:18:38 kernel display: Not usable
03/01/2008 19:18:40 configd[34] setting hostname to "home.home"
I'm not that familiar with my iMac and OS X yet but cna you stop it querying the NTP server (where it gets the current time off the net)?
Or change which server it uses because it's not seeing the Apple one.

Under the Date/Time System Preferences, tick the box next to set date & time automatically. Also you can select from 3 different servers.

Four seconds? My MBP C2D 2.16 w/ 2GB RAM, which I consider to run quickly and perfectly well, sits on the blue screen for five seconds. I rebooted just for you to time it, and my machine is only rebooted for long-distance travel or system updates.

I'm going to say this is normal.

FWIW I get much longer delays (30 seconds or more) on my Mac Pro sometimes.

Nothing ever seems to be wrong afterwards, but it's a bit unnerving. Will post a log here next time it happens in case it's the same issue.

I started getting these long blue screen pauses recently.

ie my MacBook Pro (CoreDuo) had been fine for a couple of months running Leopard, which had been installed as an in place upgrade to TIger, and recently boots started taking a very long time.

The pauses could be several minutes or more in length, and were guaranteed to be there on every boot.

I remembered that I'd added this computer to my Win2K3 Active Directory using the Directory Utility app in the utilities folder. Trying to bring up the properties of this binding caused the spining beach ball for the same period as I usually see the blue screen on boot...

On removing the binding I received an error message, but seemed to go ok - also had to remove manually any mention in search orders etc.

Anyway, for me this has completely solved the problem, boot times are normal.

I'm unsure why the AD binding failed, will re-add the machine and see if the problem re-appears.

As always, this may or may not work for your configuration... let me know if it does...

Our G5 early-2005 dual 2.0 was basically condemned by an Apple specialist (it was left in an office corner and we bought a new machine to replace it).

Bluescreens (non-temporary) would happen minutes, even seconds after a complete write-all-zeros and fresh install — what was attempted dozens of times during weeks in a row before “putting the machine to rest”.

This week we heard of a brand new MacBook that had very similar issues and, after a crazy thought, we decided to try downgrading to Tiger on the G5 and it is running straight after 5 days without any bluescreen issues.

Adding to this the fact that zero-alls and fresh installs did solve (even if for a short time) the bluescreen issues, there seems to be a very strong case for Leopard been the cause of certain specific conflicts that may cause bluescreens by itself — no app enhancer was ever install in this machine, as well as, during the last dozen or so tries, not even third party software was installed.

You might have also tested the HD for bad sectors/blocks, done a hardware test and a RAM test, and also tried booting Leopard in safe mode. I wouldn't tried those before downgrading.

Cold Warrior,

When adding this same comment to some other discussion groups I added some extra info regarding this.

For both our friend's MacBook and ours, initially the hard-drive was blamed and they were replaced. For our G5, we also replaced the RAM and the SuperDrive. Even tough these replacements would "solve" the bluescreen temporarily, it would be a matter of time before re-occurrence. In the end (in our case), the motherboard (an investment of almost a thousand bucks) was blamed.

Considering that doing zero-all disk erases and fresh system installs did solve (even if for a short time) the bluescreen issues, there seems to be a very strong case for Leopard been the cause of certain specific conflicts that may cause bluescreens by itself — no app enhancer was ever install in this machine, as well as, during the last dozen or so tries, not even third party software was installed.

It is hard to believe that this is indeed a hardware problem.

After the downgrading to Tiger we have not have BSOD issues.

This just added to our suspicion that this cannot be a hardware issue and it is related to Leopard.

OK. So you guys did what I would've done. Sounds like you're on top of it. Please let us know if you manage to track it to a Leopard-specific issue.

FWIW mine's stopped doing it (Mac Pro - I posted above that I'd had the same problem).

I've swapped out a RAID 0 array that I was using for storage and now use a single 1TB disk, and I've also replaced my X1900XT in the last while. Wish I'd been more scientific about the changes so I could have tracked it down to something, but hey - it's happy as Larry now.

Mind you, not all of you lot have Mac Pros, so it may be totally unrelated

I have been suffering much of what has been described above with a revision a macbook (core duo) and leopard.

Managed to fix it in the end.

After going through testing with tech tool pro 4 and swapping out memory and hdd's, even running leopard from a USB external drive I was stumped.

Many solutions point to the removal of third part softwares, but in my case this the problem persisted even with a fresh 'erase and install' of Leopard and no software installed.

It wasn't until I tried to access single user mode upon booting (apple + s) that I noticed an error relating to the firewire port. So I disabled it by deleting all '.kext' entries mentioning IO firewire in /system/library/extensions and the machine now works fine

Although I currently have no firewire, the machine works beautifully again with leopard and no unpredictable behaviour/pauses on the blue screen when logging in

Hope this is of some help.
