What is it adding exactly? Dad plus your last name?

I assume the "yes" refers to a MobileMe subscription?

That is odd.

MobileMe sync should *delete* the surnames from the address book on your Mac, rather than add them back on your iPhone.

How about creating duplicate entries with the short names, and leaving the full entries as they are so as to keep them on your Mac, as well?

I realize this thread is about 3 years old, but it's the only one I could find where someone had the same issue I do! Has anyone found a solution? Is anything different with iCloud?

My contacts automatically adds my brother's surname even after I've deleted and re-entered his information as a new contact!

Do you have Facebook sync turned on?

(also, thank you for acknowledging the age of this thread. It's nice to see someone who's aware of forum etiquette, and makes a point of explaining why he's chosen to violate it. For good reason, too, in this case. Welcome to the forums.)

I do not have FB sync turned on. I did my best to scrub the contact from all my synced devices and waited a day before adding him back in. So far, so good. I will post again if the mysterious surname reappears! Thanks.
