A few days ago, suddenly some of my icons in Panther became confused. I insert a CD, and instead of a CD icon showing up on the desktop, it looks like a blank document icon instead... and if you open a Finder window, the CD shows up on the left pane as a little white "Lego" block (the icon used usually for plugins)...

Any clue what's going on? I ran repair permissions...

I've seen the same thing from time to time. My "Documents" folder had the RealPlayer icon yesterday. A restart seems to sort things out.
An odd little bug this is.

I noticed this bug alot in previous builds, but so far not in 85. It used to happen alot in the 'recent items' menu as well. Haven't been able to pin down the cause.

Well, you were right -- a restart fixed the problem. For now, anyway.

And this is a retail copy of Panther, not a beta or a pirated version. Clean install too. So I don't know.

Yesterday my AIM icon went nuts. It's got this little animation when you get a new animation and there was the one frame that would change to safari, IE or some other icon. It was weird. I restarted AIM and it was fine.

On the other hand, I have a folder called "Web Sites" with a custom icon, I put it in the sidebar and a generic icon appears, it's weird.

I also have icon problems occasionally.

1. For example yesterday I connected to a server and the icon for the server was shown as textedit. Then while browsing the server all the icons were #$%@ed up.

2. When I drag an image from Safari to the desktop, I invariably only get 1/4 of the image as an icon preview (the rest is grey).

3. Sometimes the icons on inserted DVDs are all $&@*ed up.

Rebooting always solves the problems.

These problems seem to happen mainly after long uptimes and after connecting to many servers.

It isn't limited to Panther - it regularly occurred for me in Jaguar as well. However, it does seem a touch more frequent in Panther. (N.B. Totally clean install as well, so this isn't some hangover from Jag)

I've 'kind of' just gotten used to it.

It's most disconcerting when folders appear as files, though . . .
