BBC News - Kepler 22-b: Earth-like planet confirmed
Just a scant 600 light years away, Kepler 22-b is only 2.4 times the size of earth, is within the habitable zone for its star, and has a mean surface temperature of just 22°C (71.6°F).
We don't know yet if it's gaseous, rocky, or liquid. My guess would be rocky or liquid, as it's probably too small to be gaseous.
This is one of the first planets we've discovered that meet all the initial criteria for an Earth 2.0. Pretty darn exciting!

If we can find them, does that mean they can find us?

of the gazillion planets out there, i can't believe they couldn't find a habitable one at least slightly closer. </ranting>
if we have the technology to travel that far, sure we will also have the technology to make some nearby planets habitable by creating appropriate shelters and artificial ecosystems... no? =P

I doubt this will turn out to be the closest potentially habitable world. Give it a couple more years, and we'll probably find some closer ones.

We built a giant floating island out of garbage. I propose we use the same technique to build a new goldilocks planet right next door.

At least they won't have heard us yet. Not for another ~500 years.
I wonder if SETI has listened to them yet....

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I hope that, if there is life on this planet, that it tastes good.

My stupid iPhone game: Nesen Probe, it's rather old, annoying and pointless, but it's free.
Was free. Now it's gone. Never to be seen again.
Off to join its brother and sister apps that could not
keep up with the ever updating iOS. RIP Nesen Probe.

Unless they've developed faster than light listening technology

Isn't NASA about to fund SETI to listen in on that Planet? I thought I read that recently. Would be awesome if something was heard from that direction.
