MacBook1,1, Intel Core Duo 2, GHz

The disk in my friend's MacBook might be dying. Disk Utility found a header problem, which I repaired.
QUESTION:
What is the maximum size for a replacement disk?
I'm especially concerned about heat.

You can get any 2.5" SATA HDD as long as its no more than 9.5 mm thick. Currently that means max capacity is 500 GB (Samsung HM500LI). Otherwise there are several 320 GB disks to chose from.

Thanks Simon.

What about heat? My 2GB MacBook with a 60GB disk gets hot and the fans run regularly at full speed. Also we're still using 10.4.11.

Your fans are running full speed because of the CPU load, not the disk temp. The first generation CD MB is a toasty little guy. But mine does not run its fans full speed all the time. So I'm guessing it must be something you're running (background process?). Try checking top or Activity Monitor to see what is causing all that CPU load. If you can get rid of that your fan problem will be solved regardless of the disk you have or the one you might buy,

High fan activity is often (usually) associated with Ads that appear in Firefox when I'm using the the free email or free telephone service.

Yeah, that's the poor Mac implementation of Flash. Nothing your disk would change though.

Get a Flash ad blocker.

My wife and I both have Western Digital 320s, and neither gets very hot. In fact, I think they're cooler than the 120s we pulled out.

Thanks for the information. Since my last post, I've installed Adblocker Plus. It's totally amazing to experience the new MacBook "coolness" while running FireFox.
