Is anyone using a WD Scorpio 320GB WD3200BEKT 7200rpm drive in a MacBook?

It's 9.5mm thick, so it will be fine; a nice upgrade for $180.

What about the heat from the faster disk? Is the faster disk as reliable as the 5400rpm one?

Why would there be? The power consumption is the same.
I don't know about reliability differences, but I doubt they're significant.

These units cost around Euro 130.00 at shops in Germany, which means the drive costs about $200. Thanks for your informative responses.

Indeed.

You can even get a 500 GB 5400 RPM disk for your MB for €149. That's an extra €19, for a much bigger and in most cases (that is unless you plan on only putting 100 GB on that disk) even faster disk (65 MB/s).

I hope your talking about the offer and not the disk. The disk itself is by far not the best. It's neither the biggest nor the fastest.

As soon as you put more than 100 GB on that disk it will be slower than the 500GB 5400 rpm. And of course the 500 GB also offers a whole lot more capacity. Best of all the 500GB is hardly more expensive (€19 actually). The 320 GB 7200 rpm disks need to come down a lot in price if they want to seriously compete with the 500GB disks.

The startup and program launch times are much faster with the new 320GB 5400 rpm disk than with the original 60GB disk.

My bank account was the limiting factor on the final choice.

The 500 GB Hitachi disappoints, but the 500 GB Samsung Spinpoint seems to be not only the biggest but also the fastest notebook HDD you can currently buy. Unfortunately it's access time is not as nice as its transfer rates.

Hi Simon,

I'm trying to decide between the SEAGATE 320GB MOMENTUS 7200.3 SERIAL SATA 16MB 2.5" 7200RPM HARD DRIVE and the WD SCORPIO 2.5 320GB SATA 7200 8MB 12MS HARD DRIVE (sorry for the caps, it's a copy & paste).

I was wondering what your thoughts were. I definitely want 7.2krpm. Between Aperture and VMware, I'm filling my 200GB 7.2k drive that I have now. I was leaning towards the Seagate.

Thanks for any input!

Personally, between those two I'd probably go with the Seagate even though it will be more expensive. Newegg has the WD for $180 and reviews are very good. They don't have the Seagate. Newegg's disk selection is somewhat limited and they usually take a while to put new disks on their website.

I'd go with the Seagate... the 7200.2 was the IO performance king for the previous generation and the WDs usually fare pretty poorly for IO performance.

Newegg does seem to be slow at picking up newly released laptop hard drives lately; seems odd since they've been quick to market with the last few desktop releases (1TB, VelociRaptor).

My wife and I have 2 of the BEVT models (not BEKT) and they work great, actually more quiet than what I pulled out. Little or no heat difference, but I don't know the spindle speed.
