And suddenly the iPod stolen from my apartment, right in front of my eyes, doesn't seem so bad anymore. Still quite insulting, but certainly not as tragic

WOW, those are exactly ...
No, wait... I'm not jumping to any conclusions but dam, it would be nice.
Edit: All hope is now crushed. Silly, I know, I should have kept my hopes down. Well played.

I understand that the laptop is used at work for work purposes, but did the original poster ever ask BEFORE the laptop was stolen if anything was covered?
What if someone spilled coffee on the laptop at work? Should the employer pay for that?
I didn't leave it "just sitting there." It was underneath my desk, with a chair blocking it from all view. Granted, that is not an excuse, but I was not purposely leaving it where people could see it. In fact, I hid it from plain view, I just didn't think that it would be taken from underneath my desk.
[I still fear that it might have been one of my co-workers, but I can't just point a finger and say "YOU HAVE IT!" and call the cops on them.]
As for personal responsibility, I'm not hiding from it. In fact, I know that I could have done more things to protect my property. However, I am not going to loose sleep over a lesson well learned. I wont beat myself over it for it will never happen again. The freaking range of emotions I went through have ensured that I will do my best so that I don't loose my property again through carelessness.

No, I wasn't using it for work. The office here is a Win 2000 place. The reason why I brought in was that I wanted to write a few things and also one of my co-works and I share the Bleach anime videos among a others.
