So, Adam, when can we see these wonderful new icons in .icns format (gotta make them so they work with the Updated Bookmarks thing after all)?

The new icon gets a thumbs up from me, as does the whole browser. Finally final! My payment will be arriving shortly, Omni guys.

Is this rock and roll, or
a form of state control?

Truth be told, the new icon has grown on me. Still think the graphite version would look cool. But this one's pretty good once you get used to it. It just annoys me now when some other aquasphere icons are in the doc, like navigator or watson. Being easily confused as I am I sometimes reach for the old-style icon. But luckily those apps are rarely if ever open on my comp.

What exactly are Apple's rules about blue spheres? How can they define what is "Aqua" and what isn't? A transparent blue sphere is any different than any other kind of sphere? That makes no sense to me. Are these guidelines published anywhere?

Also, I'd really like to know if Apple actually made a call over to the OmniGroup and told them to change the icon. That's just wrong.

Now I know all of these Aqua spheres have always looked cool, but I feel that the OmniWeb icon has never really matched the rest of the omni apps.

So, I came up with this concept drawing:
<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/robertcurtis/other/omniicon.jpg" alt=" - " />

I'm no photoshop expert, so I was wondering whether anyone would like to have a go at turning my idea into a nice icon?

A rotated stack of documents plus a tool (not yet in Krypton's sketch).

That's what the Aqua guidelines require for an application icon. Prototypes are TextEdit, AppleWorks, Preview, Internet Connect, iPhoto, and ImageCapture.

I think such an icon could also work for a web browser. We don't have to stick with a globe for all times, only because Mosaic used it.

I wanted to put the Omni logo in the top left corner like the other Omni apps, but it obscured the browser controls.

Perhaps the tool in the bottom could be the original globe, or a compass, or a sextant - to emphasise the navigating part.

Argh! I just got the crash-on-closing-window bug with 4.1 final.

Jeez, weren't the 160 crash catcher reports that I have sent in to date enough??!

Also, the download window *still* doesn't get focus when it pops up in front of other windows, so command-W still closes the window I was browsing in. That's terribly annoying, and can probably be fixed simply by replacing a call to orderFront: with makeKeyAndOrderFront: .

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Krypton's OmniWeb icon Concept 2
This picture (although very rough) is a much more accurate representation of what I was trying to illustrate with the first picture. I know the colours aren't great, but these were the most detailed pictures I could find.

<img src="http://homepage.mac.com/robertcurtis/other/omniicon2.jpg" alt=" - " />

Anyone willing to take it further?
