I recently installed another Mac OS on another disk partition and then later on deleted the system folder (and everything else I installed) normally, but when I tried to empty the trash it said that a couple of files couldn't be deleted because they were in use. I tried restarting, option-deleting, starting from a CD, but nothing would get them from the trash! I then tried Burn! and Norton Utilities deleter, but that didn't work either. I looked around at the files, located in subfolders, and when I tried moving the files from the folders it gave a -110 error. Is reformating the disk the only solution? BTW, the installer CD was a bit scratchy, could that be the cause of the strange files?

Try restarting holding the shift key down extensions off then empty the trash.

Run Disk First Aid over your drive - any probs?
Repair it.
Do you have Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro? Or even Norton?

Yes, I wrote in my original post that I have Norton, but it was Diskwarrior that did the job. Thanks for the tip, Cipher13! :-)
