every time I hook up a USB2.0 device to the USB ports on my laptop it does not recognize it. I have a external hard drive that I want to use but it won't mount. The external drive mounts on my Pismo but not on my G4 1.25GHz powerbook. However, my printers are recognized when I plug those in. Am I doing something wrong? The external drive only has USB ports not firewire.

Are you using an external AC adaptor with the hard drive? Chances are the Powerbook can't supply enough power to the drive.

The drive is bus powered. Funny my G3 PowerBook runs it fine but my G4 PowerBook can't.

Yes, it may be able to be bus powered, but the USB from the Powerbook may not be supplying enough juice, as I said. The Pismo may have been able to supply more power on its USB 1.1 ports than the newer machine. Try an AC adaptor and see what happens.

thanks for the replies. I'll just return it and get a firewire case with power supply, the one I have now does not have a power supply.

I recently purchased a USB 2.0 external drive (portable) and it won't power up properly on my G4 PB. I hear a slight clicking, but the drive won't spin up. The Apple Tech there should be no problem with the port's power. It apparently worked fine for the recent owner.

I have a PB G4 17", and I'm experiencing the same problem with my USB 2.0 external hard drive, as well as my iPod via USB! An Apple priduct specialist is currently investigating on this problem, but this this seem to be an issue taht is new to them. I brought my PB to an Apple Store Genius Bar, and we tried other PB 15" and 17" on the floor w/ iPod, PSP, and hard drive via USB 2.0, and they experience the same problem. 12" and iBooks, on the other hand have no problem because the use of a different motherboard than the 15" and 17". The only suggestion Genius Bar gave me was to use two USB cables or an AC adapter for the hard drive, but sometimes that didn't generate enough power. Rebooting your computer would be a solution to provide sufficient power to your USB 2.0 gear. Something seems to be constraining the power supply when you run the computer for awhile. The Apple product specialist had given me something to run the diagnostics on my computer. They're evaluating results now, and I should be hearing from them shortly. Please report this issue to Apple. I think they need to hear from mpre people about this problem. Speak to a product specialist if you can. Tech support in the G4 division is no help unfortunately.
