Animated actors

hmmmmmm
who knows in 10 or 20 years, real actors will be on the street, holding signs that read 'WILL ACT FOR FOOD' and C.G. actors will be on the big screen.

This looks really well done when you stop a frame and look close, but something about the full motion still looks animated. I think the they have lighting so well controlled that it's too perfect to be seen as real, and some of the camera moves would not be possible in live action. But I'm probably just thinking about it too hard.

Maybe this is the future of movie making, but I doubt it.

I wonder what it cost to do this kind of animation vs. traditional actors and special effects?

I can't imagine this was cheaper. I also can't imagine it won't look gimmicky.

The Angelina Jolie CG model is as perfect as the real woman. *drool*

Can't wait for the Making-Of documentary.

Imagine if they used the same 3D model in a PS3/Xbox360 game.

Don't you need actors to do the voices for the characters in an animated movie?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Funnily I thought the movie was using live actors when I first saw the trailer because it was on during a commercial break on my highly compressed SD digital cable channels. I then watched the trailer at 1080p and boy was I surprised.

From the trailer, it looks just "fantastic" enough to make a good telling of a legendary story. Great cast, great idea, beautiful pictures... I'll be lining up for it.

It has Angelina Jolie in it so it will probably be crap or flop.

It will probably bore me like Final Fantasy and that CG Tom Hanks on a train thing.

Beyond the Uncanny Valley or not? The trailer sure looks good. Looking forward to this.

CG could very well be cheaper, when you consider the cost of doing retakes and shooting multiple camera angles with live action film, and that this is infinitely easier and more quickly done with CG.

They still need to render multiple angles and do many experimental takes with CG. Even more in fact because they need to keep rendering out in high quality to see if the textures and lighting are right. That has to be done for every shot.

Shooting some lines again on film or digital media is much quicker and often cheaper than modeling, animating, texturing, lighting, permanent storage, render farms, rendering multiple tests and final scenes, print to film etc. Cost can vary and go very high. If they have to pay some i-was-born-to-save-the-world celebutard like Jolie $10 million dollars for voicing a character on top of the costs of paying CG artists then it is not likely saving.

The only reason this is CG is for gimmick purposes. They want to say "Hey audiences look what we did!". That hype didn't exactly work for Final Fantasy.
