Why does Apple release a new colored iPhone a few months before they are expected to present the iPhone 5? Does this mean the 5 will be delayed substantially? Is the 5 going to have the same case as the 4? The reason I'm in to this is that I'm waiting for the 5 to finally get an iPhone. But if I have to wait too long, whatever that is for me, I'll just get the 4. Apart from that, it is really cool looking, the white gives it that visual lightness that the MacBook line has.

Because they've been promising the white iPhone for almost a year now. It's well overdue.
And there's no guarantee when the new iPhone is coming.

Apple sells hundreds of thousands of iPhones every day, all year long, not just for the first few months after a new release.
There are still people waiting for white and since no one really knows when the iPhone 5 is coming, they can't necessarily wait any longer for a new phone.
Besides, with a 2-year contract, it means their contract will be up just in time for iPhone 7!

The white iPhone has a different case to the black one. It's thicker and the ports are different. Odd that Apple should go to the trouble of re tooling for the white phone shortly before 5 comes out. Unless 5 will have this revised form factor. Or come out next year.

Or it could be they had to do some slight modifications to the design to correct the issues they were having with producing the white version. Not sure how making it thicker would help apply white paint, but I'm no engineer.
