Microsoft has sold more than five million
Xbox One game consoles since its launch, the company has
revealed. While Microsoft is celebrating the sales milestone, the game console is still far behind the leading
PlayStation 4, with Sony reporting more than 7 million units sold worldwide in a
blog post just one day before Microsoft's announcement.
NPD results released by Microsoft note that 311,000 units of the Xbox One were sold in the United States alone in March, beating Xbox 360 sales of 111,000 in the same month. In terms of game sales, the Xbox One sold 1.4 million copies in March, with the Xbox 360 adding 2.7 million and bringing the total number of Xbox game sales up to 4.1 million in the period. It is suggested that the total figure made up 49 percent of the total software market share.
In January, Microsoft revealed it had sold a total of 3.9 million Xbox one consoles since its launch, with the new sales total representing an increase of 1.1 million units between January and the end of March.
Sony's figures for the PlayStation 4 place it as selling more than 20.5 million games for the platform in stores and in the PlayStation Store globally. Console owners have accumulated more than 135 million shares of PS4 content, broadcast more than 4.9 million streams on Twitch and Ustream, and spectated almost 90 million sessions. Sony's headlining 7 million console sales figure is itself up from the 5.3 million number revealed
in February.
