Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Disregard this post, it's full of almosts. I had a 1400. Some of them came with an 8mb chip but later ones with a 16mb chip. The chip actually wasn't soldered on, it was just pressed into the Motherboard. Unique ram, though. If yours has an 8mb chip, dumb it and get a 16, it just plugs in. The 117cs Dual scan screen is the one that came with the 8mb chip.

64 is the max the motherboard will "see". The standard chips are the 24s. But you could also get a 32 and a 48mb chip. The larger chip is still available. You must have it if you want to max the ram AND you have the NewerTech 1mb video card. I did and had both the large ram chip and the video card from Newer. You should be able to find them on ebay. (I got the ram chip new in 2000. If you need a vendor, email me. It cost about 190 bucks - this is the edit)

That 1400 was sure a great machine. I got three years out of it. And with the Newer G3 250/1mb upgrade it was quite snappy as well. I would have given it the nod as the best all around laptop Mac ever made until I got my Pismo. No comparison.

I just did a search and found the 48mb chip for 138 dollars.

Let me know if you need the info.

Thanks for the info, I have maxed it out to 64M with two 24M chips, but wondered if it was possible to have more.

Apple say the original iMac could only have 96M of RAM, but my friend has 512M in his and it works fine
